“What is going off out there?”

Not surprising to find a Yorkshire fan among the supporters at Pallekele.

Some chuntering around the ground with England losing early wickets.

Moeen follows Jos Buttler's lead and sweeps a leg side delivery away for a single, before Buttler does the same.

This has been a canny innings from Buttler so far. He's been racing along. That'll be lunch.

We're going to squeeze in one more over before lunch.

It'll be Dilruwan Perera back to bowl it.

Chris Jones: Best form of defence is attack on a bunsen. Buttler sweeping majestically both sides of the wicket.

Ben Simons: It’s the 28th over on the 1st day of a Test match and I’m watching Buttler hit 3 x 4s in a row at 103-4 and still going for it... it’s impressive but it’s just not Test cricket.

Tossed up from Malinda Pushpakumara, and Jos Buttler absolutely hammers the ball over mid-wicket for four.

And again... Buttler is on 35, and I'm fairly sure all of the runs have come from sweeps.

Dananjaya took only four balls to take a wicket after a difficult week for him with the ICC confirming his action is to be investigated.

The issue of throwing has always been one of cricket’s hottest issues. In the past bowlers were condemned if found guilty without a proper process.

At least the system is fairer now, although it does give rise to this sort of situation where a bowler under investigation is allowed to play in a match knowing that all eyes will be on them.

Jos Buttler works the final ball for a single. Just the 13 runs from the over.

    Four more!

This time it's the reverse sweep from Jos Buttler and Angelo Mathews, out in the deep, can't pick up the ball in time.

Shot! Jos Buttler absolutely nails a sweep off Akila Dananjaya, almost taking short leg out in the process.

Oh, and again! Same shot, same result.

I'd love to see England get 500+, bat once and see how Sri Lanka fare on a traditional, turning wicket.

Is it me, or are England always not-a-lot-for-4?

Moeen whips out a sweep shot straight away and misses, although Jos Buttler connects with one for a single.

    Pallekele

There's a lovely atmosphere at the ground with most England supporters making the most of the grass banks that surround the playing area.

In theory Pallekele has a capacity of 35,000, so no issues with England fans getting tickets for this Test.

We are expecting around 6,000 England fans at this game and they are again massively outnumbering the local support with just a sprinkling of Sri Lanka fans in - plus some enthusiastic school parties.

    That's out, though!

Turn for Akila Dananjaya, and it's done for Rory Burns. The opener has a little push at a delivery that just turns away from him and sends a thick outside edge to slip. Dhananjaya de Silva reacts well to take a good, low catch, and Burns must go.

Another sweep from Rory Burns, and keeper Niroshan Dickwella is convinced he's got an outside edge on it.

He hasn't. There's fresh air between bat and ball. The tell-tale thud was bat hitting foot.

Akila Dananjaya, who had his bowling action reported in the first Test, is going to bowl.

He must be tested within 14 days of being reported and is allowed to continue bowling until the results are known. Skipper Lakmal said yesterday it was his stock off-spinner that is under scrutinty.

Left-armer Malinda Pushpakumara continues and promptly gets swept square of the wicket by Rory Burns. The opener looks in good touch.

Burns reverse sweeps into the ground, briefly interesting the slip fielder, who dives forward in vain to take a catch.

If you're just joining us, then morning! England are being very England-y.

Joe Root won his seventh consecutive toss and offered to bat first on a dry pitch that has spun from the off.

Keaton Jennings was the first to go, caught behind having a tickle at Suranga Lakmal, before new number three Ben Stokes was trapped lbw on review by Dilruwan Perera.

And Root himself has fallen in this first session, Malinda Pushpakumara sneaking a delivery through his forward defensive and onto his stumps. Catch up with the scorecard.
