Root 6, Burns 24
Some turn for Malina Pushpakumara, who beats Joe Root as he aims an expansive drive through the covers.
Oh, what a shot that is, though! That's four for Root, skipping down the pitch and driving the ball back over the bowler's head.
England have tried a lot of players at number three over the past few years.
Here's how their numbers add up:
Dilruwan 7-3-21-1
Dilruwan Perera guides a delivery into Joe Root's pads and the England captain is under way with a whipped single.
Rory Burns then gets squared up by a spinning delivery that drops just short of the man at slip.
Annoying for England, as Ben Stokes looked in good touch.
Joe Root's in at four, and the players are having a quick drinks break.
Stokes lbw Dilruwan 19 (Eng 44-2)
And it is!
Ben Stokes just got squared up, Dilruwan Perera getting the ball to turn past his outside edge and hit him on the knee roll. Stokes is so far back in his crease that he's trapped right in front of his off stump. I'm not entirely sure why that wasn't given out on the field because it just looked out. Stokes swishes his bat against his leg as he walks off.
This looks horribly out.
We've got another review for lbw against Ben Stokes.
This one looks closer than the last...

Stokes is playing positively whilst demonstrating the defensive technique which has earned him this promotion to number three.
Some deliveries from the off-spinner are already turning sharply. It is really important that England make the most of this opportunity to bat first.
Down the pitch comes Rory Burns but he can't beat the man at mid-wicket, who pings in a throw that just misses Burns' head. Burns shoots him a look as he holds his hands up in apology.
Tidy stuff, and that's a maiden first up for Malinda Pushpakumara.
Now then. Time for a change of bowling.
Here's left-arm spinner Malinda Pushpakumara. Just the 668 first-class wickets to his name.
Dilruwan 6-3-18-0
Short, wide, and thumped off the back foot by Rory Burns for four.
Dilruwan Perera is giving his off-spin some extra pace, but Ben Stokes get down to sweep him square for another couple of runs.

I am really hopeful in regard to Ben Stokes and the new role. We all seem preoccupied about his existing average but, looking back, Smith couldn't buy a run at six for Australia and was then a world beater at three. Gatting went from a so-so number five to a good three. It used to be the case that three was there for a strokemaker who knew where his off stump was. I believe in Ben, even on a dust bowl. He does know his off stump and moves his feet!
Neil, Edgbaston
Stokes 15, Burns 18
On that note from Jimmy, Keaton Jennings has been dismissed five times by a spinner in Tests and averages 48.60 against them. Against pace, he's been out 19 times and averages just 15.26.
Rory Burns gets up on tiptoes to see off a rising delivery from Suranga Lakmal, before Ben Stokes times the backside off a drive through mid-off for four. Gorgeous.

Jimmy Dawson: It’s staggering the difference in Jennings when facing up to a pacer rather than a spinner.
A fairly eventful maiden comes to an end with some more solid defence from Ben Stokes.
Umpire's call on height!
Well, I'd have thought for all the world that was going over the top. It's just clipping the top of the stumps. Ben Stokes survives, and Sri Lanka keep their review.
There's no edge.
It's hit Ben Stokes way above the knee roll, although he's very deep in his crease...
There's a slip, short leg and cover in place for Dilruwan Perera as he bowls to Ben Stokes. Stokes covers up in defence before ignoring an almighty appeal for lbw.
It looked high... oh, Suranga Lakmal has made the T sign! We're going upstairs.
