  3. Eng 79-3published at 23 overs

Malinda Pushpakumara changes his angle and beats Jos Buttler as he presses forward, before the number five slaps a reverse sweep in the direction of a fielder.

That's lovely, though, another little nudge from Buttler beating the man at leg slip and adding another couple to the total.

Kevin Ticehurst: Can we please have some sort of patience from our top order?! Can someone just dig in now, build a partnership?

  5. Eng 71-3published at 22 overs

    Burns 35, Buttler 1

A change in bowling, with off-spinner Dhananjaya de Silva replacing Dilruwan Perera.

Jos Buttler hustles him just past leg slip to get off the mark.

    Eng 69-3

Jos Buttler has been completely done by the flight of the ball - but he's managed to shove his foot back into his crease.

    As you were.

  8. Umpire reviewpublished at 20.4 overs

Terrific work from Niroshan Dickwella to whip the bails off as Jos Buttler stretches forward to face Malinda Pushpakumara.

England in trouble now with the loss of their captain.

Root pushed forward and the ball bowled him between bat and pad, which you have to put down to a technical fault.

I don’t think Geoffrey Boycott would have been impressed.

  10. Eng 69-3published at 20 overs

    Dilruwan 10-3-31-1

Rory Burns, meanwhile, carries on where he left off. Another fine, hard sweep beats the close fielders and races away for four.

A half-appeal for lbw follows as Dilruwan Perera works a delivery past Burns' bat, but it's struck him high on the back leg. Dangerous times.

Well. That came out of nowhere.

Jos Buttler is in at five.

    Ah.

Joe Root has been bowled through the gate. The England skipper pushes forward, playing for turn, but he leaves a gap between bat and pad. It's a forward defensive from Root, looking nearly perfect, apart from the bit where he plays down the wrong line and gets an inside edge onto his pads and then onto his stumps. Gone.

Shot! Four more for Joe Root as he sweeps Malinda Pushpakumara into the deep, way out of reach of any of the fielders.

Having spent years reading early morning texts from parents up at anti-social hours following the cricket, I now find myself insisting on taking the 5am shift with our four-week-old so my wife can get some rest - only snag is every time I turn the cricket on we lose a wicket, sorry Stokes.

A very tidy over from Dilruwan Perera, with Joe Root and Rory Burns exchanging singles before Root covers up in defence.

I'm going to apologise to Coco on Ben Stokes' behalf.

Dilruwan Perera, with figures of 1-26, is going to continue.

    Run rate 3.41

Ben Stokes is currently huddled in front of a laptop, presumably watching that dismissal.

On the field, Rory Burns plonks himself on one knee and sweeps nicely for a couple.

Having survived an early DRS review, Stokes wasn’t so lucky that time.

It was so plumb I was actually surprised the umpire didn’t give him out in the first place.

It was a good piece of bowling: a classic off-spinner's dismissal to a left-hander. It squared him up and turned enough to beat the straight bat of Stokes.

The ball is turning and this game may not last the full five days at this rate.

Kusal Mendis' reactions at short leg are supreme!

Rory Burns tucks into the leg side and sets off for a run, but Kusal is so quick. In one swift movement he stops the ball, balances himself and throws the ball at the stumps, which just misses. Ridiculous hand speed.
