  1. SL 22-1published at 8 overs

Two slips and a short leg in place for Moeen as he bowls to Karunaratne.

Another big appeal from everyone as Moeen strikes the batsman on the back leg, but that's sliding down, and Ben Foakes knows it from behind the stumps. That did straighten, though, and Karunaratne is camped deep in his crease. Maiden.

I think you just hold your hands up and say 'well bowled' when you get a delivery like that.

    Leach 4-0-2-1

    Oh, nearly another one!

Nightwatchman Malinda Pushpakumara watches Jack Leach rip one past his outside edge. Lovely stuff.

Pitched on middle and leg, hit the top of off stump.

    Well played, Jack Leach.

    Gone! Bowled him!

That's a terrific bit of work from Jack Leach. He angles a ball in and gets it to grip, turning at the last second past Kaushal Silva's defensive push forward. The batsman overbalances slightly and ends up missing the ball entirely.

Darren Henwood: Could Sam Curran become the next Jacques Kallis?

Keir: Can see Curran becoming England’s Jacques Kallis if he can continue this start to his Test career. Could become a regular number 3 (certainly has the game for it) and an important bowler for the next 15 years.

  8. SL 21-0published at 7 overs

A swish through the covers brings Dimuth Karunaratne a couple, before Moeen gets one to turn and take the outside edge.

It bounces just short of Ben Stokes' grasping hand at slip. Not far away...

He was, but Joe Root wants spin from both ends.

    Here's Moeen.

He's bowling nicely here is Jimmy.

  11. SL 16-0published at 6 overs

Surely there's a better nickname for Jack Leach out there than just Leachy? It feels a bit... obvious.

Sri Lanka pick off the singles where they can and milk three runs from the over.

  12. SL 13-0published at 5.1 overs

A big shout for lbw first up as Dimuth Karunaratne comes darting down the pitch.

I think he's too far down for that to be lbw, and Joe Root agrees. No review.

    Time for a change.

Jack Leach is being brought into the attack, with seven overs left in the day.

  15. SL 13-0published at 5 overs

    Karunaratne 8, Kaushal 5

A leading edge from Kaushal Silva, and it beats the flying man at third slip and Sam Curran down at third man to race away for four.

Anderson's response is a belter of a ball that rises and beasts Kaushal's outside edge as he prods forward.

  17. SL 9-0published at 4 overs

A half appeal for a catch as Sam Curran drifts onto the pads, but there's nothing doing.

Marc Sepetowski: I wonder if, in a couple or years' time, Sam Curran could nail down the number three spot for years to come? Sound defensive technique, good aggression too but his temperament is what is most impressive.

  19. SL 9-0published at 3.3 overs

Umpire Erasmus has a pointed look at Sam Curran's follow through, just to dissuade him from landing on the wicket.

That's a shot from Dimuth Karunaratne, batting well out of his crease, and he punches down the ground to pick up four.

This looks like a surface that will deteriorate quite quickly. You just have to hope you're not the team who gets the low score.
