  1. SL 5-0published at 3 overs

Quick from James Anderson, up at around 86mph, but it's down the leg side and Dimuth Karunaratne can ignore it.

Nine overs left in the day.

  2. SL 4-0published at 2.1 overs

Jimmy's been saying for years that he's wasted at 11.

A speculative appeal from Ben Foakes as Karunaratne has a late fiddle at an Anderson delivery, but the bat has flicked pad, rather than ball.

Fenners: A word for Rashid and Jimmy who have dug in and allowed Curran to score and England to get near par. Why not play Jimmy as a number three bat? He can block all day!

  4. SL 4-0published at 2 overs

    Trail by 281 runs

Sam Curran sneaks a delivery between Karunaratne's bat and pad, which leaves Joe Root aghast in the slip cordon.

Karunarante walks down the wicket to push a single away, and that's a tidy over from Curran.

Unsurprisingly, Sam Curran will share the new ball with James Anderson.

Every time we see Sam Curran I forget how young he is - that's the biggest compliment I can give him. He's just a kid really, but he makes the right calls and plays maturely in terms of the situation.

When Rashid came out and played shots, Sam Curran just hung in there as he didn't need to be aggressive, but as soon as Anderson came out, he exploded into life. He's a high-class player now but he can get better and better. England have got a really good cricketer on their hands.

  7. SL 3-0published at 1 over

A superb take from Ben Foakes, diving to his right to collect the ball as James Anderson strays down the leg side.

And again from Anderson, searching for inswing. Karunaratne pushes a straight delivery away to get Sri Lanka's innings under way.

Dan Bridgeman: Sam Curran's batting average was just under 38 prior to today’s innings. Bowling average under 24. Seemingly always bats with England under huge pressure, and unselfish batting with the tail. So batting average could be even higher. Is he England's best all-rounder?

  9. SL 0-0published at 0.1 overs

Dimuth Karunaratne shoulders arms to his first delivery from Anderson.

    Right. Here we go.

James Anderson, fresh from his seven not out, will open the bowling.

The only use for an umbrella hat today in Pallekele is to protect yourself from the sun.

It’s actually a perfect temperature for watching cricket at the ground now.

A light breeze just taking the edge off the heat and the 6,000-plus England fans gathered here loved that batting by Sam Curran.

Right, Sri Lanka have roughly 12 overs to survive.

I wouldn't be surprised if they were a couple down by the close. It was a weary-looking side that trudged off the pitch.

Extraordinary stuff from Sam Curran, who was given noble support from Anderson.

England were 225-9 when James Anderson walked out to join Sam Curran.

They've ended their innings on 285, thanks to Curran's counter-attacking. He went from 16 off 65 balls to 64 from 119. It's just clever, aggressive, thrilling batting.

    Booo.

A brilliant innings from Sam Curran finally comes to an end as he darts down the pitch and slaps a simple catch to Dimuth Karunaratne on the boundary. What a performance from SCurran.

    It's bounced!

From the first angle they showed, that looked out. Chris Gaffney asked for a better picture and it showed, clearly, that it bounced in front of Angelo Mathews. Curran survives.
