I want to take a moment to thank Joe Root for standing up yesterday and showing young LGBT kids that there is a place in cricket for them. But that sentiment also requires this to be followed up correctly. For all the men and women who grew up on the wicket hearing those kind of jibes and insults, it would go a long way to demonstrating how much the game has changed over the years.

What might be unfair on the players is there is no consistency in terms of what is taken from the stump microphone and put out on social media. Gabriel will have played his whole career and there's nothing which has been snipped up and put out there. To have a scenario where as a player, you are not really switched on to that I think it's quite exposing of players and will make them feel uncomfortable.

There's no consistency of saying that every game the best comments - or the worst - are snipped up. It will come as a surprise to him that he's out there and there needs to be a little more consistency that if you take comments from players, you take the good and the bad regularly so it becomes ingrained in players that this is what happens.

Looking back, playing mens cricket as a young teenager was far more impactful than just a game - it was also looking around a field and the blokes you were playing with and against and using that to inform the sort of person you wanted to be - sport is a rite of passage for young people, and we shouldn't underestimate the impact of on-field conduct at all levels.

It's not as though there are many gay cricketers out there. There were so many reasons for Root not to engage in that conversation. The fact that he did, that he showed how he thought it was inappropriate, it spoke lots to his character. Well done to him.

I think it says a lot about Joe Root's character that he responded in such a way, and so calmly.

He's been praised by Kirsty Clark, the director of sport at Stonewall, which campaigns for lesbian, gay, bi and trans equality.

She said: "Language is really influential and it's great if Joe Root was willing to challenge potentially abusive comments.

"The more players, fans, clubs and organisations that stand up for equality in sport, the sooner we kick discrimination out and make sport everyone's game."

    Thanks, Matt.

We've spent a lot of the morning talking about Joe Root and the incident with Shannon Gabriel yesterday. Root responding to an on-field comment from Gabriel by saying: "Don't use it as an insult. There's nothing wrong with being gay."

Like England I'm off for a breather. Thing is, rather than bowl 90mph, the most tiring thing I've done in the last two hours is reach for some chocolate.

You're an unsympathetic bunch. Mark Wood hits Roston Chase with a bouncer = 66 thumbs up (and counting).

Might have something to do with England being starved of a truly fast bowler for so long.

I still can't get over how good this catch was from Moeen Ali.

It gave England their first wicket of this innings and sent them on their way.

    Brilliant.

Shimron Hetmyer is flat on his back at the crease. In fairness he's actually played this bouncer from Wood pretty well. He dropped his hands, ducked and only toppled over at the last minute.

It's good to see an England bowler being able to bowl with this aggression.

That's lunch. An excellent session for England. I think they might win this.

Ouch. Mark Wood hits Roston Chase on the glove with a bouncer. West Indies don't need any more injuries. Chase shakes his hand furiously to try and relieve the pain.

The England fans cheer the aggression. They're not showing much sympathy.

If Keemo Paul doesn't bat then England would of course only need nine wickets to win. We haven't seen Paul since he was stretchered off with a thigh strain yesterday.

Ben Stokes is unsuccessful in his latest over.

There's going to be time for one more before lunch.
