Dom Sibley is the man to turn to next week, he's the opener in form and it's on his own turf at Edgbaston!

Jonny Bairstow is a bit of a worry for me. He gets bowled attempting those big, booming drives a lot...

I'd have Jos Buttler at five and Ben Stokes at six. Jonny Bairstow's game is so well suited at six or seven. He is one of England's best five batters, but there's something about having someone of his class coming in at seven. I like that power in the middle.

What odds would you have got 18 months ago for both Scotland and Ireland to beat England at cricket?

We've got some groundstaff coming out. It's an encouraging sign. More so, reserve umpire Rob Bailey has taken his umbrella down.

In many ways, a loss today wouldn't be the worst thing for England before the Ashes. If it makes them confront the obvious flaws that have been there for a good few years, and they can work out how they want to go about playing Test cricket, that can only be a good thing.

The problem is, we've only got six days before England line up to face Australia.

I don't think there will be high-scoring games in the Ashes. it will be a cracking series.

  16. Postpublished at 11:47 British Summer Time 26 July 2019

This Ashes series has the potential to be unintentionally hilarious. Two sides trying to out-collapse one another.

England's technique looked so bad against the moving ball on Wednesday. Now, if Australia can get the ball to move, coupled with that extra pace and nasty bounce their bowlers are capable of getting, it could make for grim watching.

Well things are looking good for the Ashes. We obviously only struggle against 75-80 mph medium pace and we certainly won't have to face any of that against the Aussies!

You could probably make the argument now to have Jason Roy batting at three - but then the eternal who should open problem still looms large.

If anyone wants to invent a time machine, go back to 2010 and clone Andrew Strauss, that might be easier than trying to find a new opener, if we're honest.

  20. 'Root should bat at three'published at 11:41 British Summer Time 26 July 2019

    Alastair Cook
Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

Joe Root should be batting at three. We've got loads of people who can bat at our, five, six. He is England's best ever batter - he is phenomenal.

I know he wants to bat at four and he feels most comfortable there. He feels batting at four, he will score more runs - it gives him that little bit more time.

It's a pointless argument because he doesn't want to do it.
