You don't want to be batting last on this. England need a lead - 80 or 100 would be good.
Burns 125*, Stokes 38*
Burns' maiden Test century
Survives lbw on 21 - out if reviewed
Root 57, Denly 18, Roy 10, Buttler 5
Two wickets for Pattinson

Burns 92, Buttler 5
Rory Burns jams his bat down on one and it deflects into his pads. Still nervy times and he remains on 92.

Bill Bows: Classic Denly Test innings that. A couple of lovely drives and then out. Would Curran score more? Probably. Would Curran give an extra bowling option? Definitely. Will England make the change for Lord's? Of course not.
Rory Burns has been on 92 for about 25 minutes now.

Awkward being the non-striking batsman when your partner comes down to ask about a referral and you know they're plumb. It's like a mini-dumping. Best to be honest - "It's all over" - but tempting to be kind: "Really sorry" (grimace) "not sure this is going to work..."

Pat Cummins beat the edge of Rory Burns' bat four times in that over. The England opener is somehow still there though.

These are nervy, edgy times for Rory Burns.
Yeesh. Pat Cummins is finding a tough line sending it across the left-handed Rory Burns, beating first the inside and then the outside edge.
The latter nips off the seam, which must be more pronounced than the ball that was recently replaced.
It's good that there is nothing in recent Australia cricket history that would lead anyone to start up the conspiracy theories about why this replacement ball is moving around, eh?

Everything about this ball is so much more dramatic. Australia just sniff an opening here.

Was Bancroft looking after the umpires box of balls last night?

Jos Buttler doesn't miss much. You bowl him anything and he puts it away crisply and cleanly. It's such a gift.

Shot! James Pattinson pushes it full and wide, in search of swing, but Jos Buttler has terrific wrists and hand-eye coordination, marmalising it through the covers for four.
Good from Buttler, leaving alone a few swinging deliveries outside off before putting away the bad ball.
Ball tracking for that Joe Denly lbw shows three reds. Very out.
Denly looks alright for a bit, has the odd technical flaw and just gets out. Still far from convinced he belongs at Test level.

Jos Buttler has just been given a standing ovation for walking to the crease.
A huge roar.
Jos Buttler enters.

Anyone else think that new cherry has suddenly made a big difference? Looks a lot shinier than the original...

It looked good. It's that ball!
Denly lbw Pattinson 18 (Eng 189-3)
That new old ball has made the difference.
James Pattinson sends it down with a slightly scrambled seam and the ball nips in at Joe Denly, who misses driving down the wrong line and it hits his front pad.
Big appeal and given! Denly deliberates over a review with Rory Burns but decides against it.
Probably wise - that looked very much out.

Comedy fancy dress comes with its problems. A chap in the Hollies is struggling to juggle sandpaper and a cricket ball in one hand with his pint in the other.
