James Anderson is now having some batting practice.

If he ends up batting today then things have gone horribly wrong.

The morning after the night before. Everything is calmer on the second morning of Test. Traffic not as jammed, punters in less of a hurry, fewer officials, media and hangers-on crawling the outfield. Try telling that to Rory Burns and Jason Roy, though, as England's openers prepare to face the Pat Cummins-led orchestra. The sun is out, so it feels like a batting day. But still.....

  3. 'Dry with a chance of showers'published at 10:41 British Summer Time 2 August 2019

BBC Weather's Mel Coles: "For much of today's play it will be dry, but there is a still a chance of an isolated showers this afternoon.

"It's quite humid day with light winds. We're looking at a high of 23C."

Smith's was one of those innings where you're scratching your head. I still don't quite believe how he managed to pull it off. It's 122-8 and the Ashes is gone in the first two sessions.

  5. Anderson said sorry to bowlers - Broadpublished at 10:38 British Summer Time 2 August 2019

England bowler Stuart Broad on James Anderson's injury: "He feels like he has let the bowling group down, but he hasn't.

"He is a bit quiet and a bit frustrated. He came up to the bowlers and said sorry, but there is nothing to be sorry about.

"We don't know the full extent yet. All we can hope is the news is better than we expect."

We've just seen some clips on the telly of James Anderson going through some running drills and sprints this morning.

He, er, doesn't look happy. But that's not unusual.

  10. 'Smith deserves a second chance'published at 10:29 British Summer Time 2 August 2019

    Tom Fordyce
BBC chief sports writer at Edgbaston

The sandpaper scandal did more than strip the sheen from Smith and his team. It triggered the most intense period of introspection and criticism that Australian cricket has seen.

Because of the place Australian cricket has in the Australian psyche, it went beyond sport to the corners of the national character that little else can touch.

You were never sure Smith was going to come back to cricket, even though cricket has been his life. When he did, you wondered what he might find there, and whether he could be the same indomitable batsman again.

And yet you watched him at Edgbaston on Thursday and it was like nothing had ever interrupted him.

Read more from Tom Fordyce on Smith's ton here.

  14. 'I lost a bit of my love for cricket'published at 10:25 British Summer Time 2 August 2019

Australia's Steve Smith, who scored 144 yesterday: "There were times throughout the last 15 months where I didn't know if I was ever going to play cricket again.

"I lost a bit of love for it at one point, particularly when I had my elbow operation. It was really bizarre that it was the day I got the brace off my elbow, I found a love for it again.

"I don't know what it was, it was like a trigger that just said 'right I'm ready to go again, I want to play'."

    And so, to today. Morning!

England managed to survive two overs last night - genuinely, I thought they'd be two down by the close - and they're resuming today on 10-0, trailing Australia's first innings total by 274.
