Burns 81, Denly 2
That's lovely from Peter Siddle. The delivery tempts Joe Denly forward before drifting away from the batsman's defensive stroke. Paine yelps as the ball hits his gloves, frustrated there is no edge.
Burns 125*, Stokes 38*
Burns' maiden Test century

These two just need to get to tea now. It'll still be a good session for England if they do.
We've got about nine minutes into the interval.

Just grind the runs out, that's what matters. It's five days of Test cricket.

Burns move to 80 before Denly watchfully sees out the remainder of Nathan Lyon's 14th over. Matthew Wade has clocked up plenty of steps on his pedometer today and now he dives well at mid-wicket to stop a single.

Sorry, Root's wicket was my fault. Had been diligently following England innings via text and didn't dare switch to radio commentary for fear of upsetting the balance. As England were progressing smoothly eventually succumbed and put my ear phones in only to hear Root's wicket! Sorry everyone...

A solid first over from Denly. He finds the middle of the bat and then leaves the ball outside off.
He always looks neat and tidy at the crease. Can he get himself a score on his Ashes debut?

Australia attacked with the new ball, rightly, but when your luck isn't there, you have to change your field placings, go a little more defensive, and tie them down. And Australia have kept on being sucked in by the odd play-and-miss.
Burns 79, Denly 2
Joe Root angrily punched the hand rail leading up to the England dressing room after that wicket. He was not impressed. He'll know there is still plenty of work to do.
Joe Denly, batting four for England for the first time and inexperienced at Test level, gets off the mark with a tuck off the hip for two.

I can't stress enough how big a plus that is that Lyon, who is a good bowler, is not getting the left-hander out. Or put it another way - Burns is keeping him at bay.

More nervy moments as Lyon rips one past Burns' edge. It has got quiet again - tense.
That's better! Lyon has not been at his best today in my opinion. He drops short. Burns cuts him to the boundary.
England need more of that.

This pitch is on the slow side and turning early. It's like an Indian pitch.
Joe Denly is now in the middle. England will not want one wicket to bring a second.

Joe Root, it wasn't one of his normal innings, but he came out with a plan, saying we are not going to be 30-3, which has happened far too often. He was determined to stay in, try and make a platform, and he's done it very well. Sometimes you have to play to situations. He's tried to make sure that England can get going. The mindset is different now.

A lovely, sharp catch from Peter Siddle! That is the change of fortune Australia needed, and exactly what England didn't need.
Root c&b Siddle 57 (Eng 154-2)
Ah. England captain Joe Root can't believe this. He's having to drag himself from the crease.
He has chipped a drive back down the pitch and Peter Siddle has stuck out his right hand and clung onto the catch.
There's an angry clench of the fist from Siddle. Australia needed that.

Just paddle-swept a pigeon that had homed in on a dropped crisp. Over the unknown keeper for four.

Oh no. I'm wrong. Geoffrey is not happy with Tim Paine's tactics.
Rory Burns needs to settle down. Is he losing concentration?
He now wafts, loosely at Peter Siddle.
That shot came just as Geoffrey returned to TMS. I'll take a punt that a rant is incoming.

The cut shot has got Rory Burns out on many occasions, against quick and slow bowlers alike.

Blimey. Is this Rory Burns' day?
He goes back, misses a spinning delivery from Nathan Lyon, and the ball somehow evades his stumps before going for a bye through Tim Paine's legs.
