The Hollies is just starting to believe. If the morning was tense, the greater trickle of runs this afternoon is increasing the noise level. A rendition of the national anthem, the Queen parading the World Cup. English momentum is building.

After a soporific start to the afternoon session, the sauce has started kicking in around the ground and the noise levels are rising with it. There is tension in the slow scoring but great delight in the reviews that have kept Root alive.

It's tantalising cricket. The runs are flowing but they're not always under control. These little slices and dices are going England's way.

The momentum is certainly with England. Pattinson finds a good length and Burns plays a skewed defensive stroke but the ball runs away through a gap for two more.

    And again!

This one is a proper edge. Burns drives hard but through a gap in the slips. Four runs.

These two English batsmen have done the hard yards. Now they're starting to cash in a little bit more. That's old fashioned Test cricket!

More runs. Pattinson drifts onto Joe Root's pads early in his over. The England skipper takes full advantage, flicking the ball to the mid-wicket fence.

    "Roooooooot."

A change of bowling. James Pattinson is replacing Nathan Lyon.

Burns went hard at that, but the edge took it way over the top of Usman Khawaja.

    Burns 59, Root 29

The Queen is leading the cheers in the Hollies Stand - not the real one of course. She's got the World Cup in her hands and the crowd bellow "Championes, Championes, ole ole ole".

The noise levels lift further when Burns slashes hard and the ball flies over slip for four.

You can sense England are on top.

Root tries the same trick again off the final ball of Lyon's over but misses out. The ball is fumbled by Australia's specialist wicketkeeper-captain Tim Paine.

    A profitable over for England.

Joe Root has got busier in the last few overs. That was neatly placed, just deftly flicking it around the corner.

    100 up!

Delicate play from Joe Root as he nibbles the ball around the corner. The glancing blow sees the ball run away for four down to fine leg.

  19. 'Australia have allowed England to get away'published at 14:17 British Summer Time 2 August 2019

    Glenn McGrath
Ex-Australia bowler on BBC Test Match Special

My general consensus is Australia have bowled a little shorter than what England did yesterday and it's just allowed England to get away. England have had a little luck, with the ball hitting the stumps and not knocking the bails off. Siddle has bowled really well. He doesn't give too much away.

  20. Eng 97-1published at 38 overs

    Run rate 2.55

Siddle's pitch map would look like a small blob of red paint on a good length. He has been very consistent. He mixes it up with a bouncer in this over before reverting to type. It's another maiden for the veteran, his fourth of the innings.
