The immediacy of the review suggests Root has hit it but there is no big deviation on the first replay.

    The England captain reviews immediately.

He's played very nicely so far. Good technique and it's more mentality, when you've got so much pressure on your place, to come out and play in this fashion.

    Burns 53, Root 12

Right after reaching his half-century Burns chips one behind square on the offside. Lyon yelps in the hope of a catch but it falls safely. It's an edgy end to the over too for the England opener.

    Keep going.

Hoop: Test match cricket is so very boring! 180 balls bowled and 74 runs scored .. wake me up when it’s over ! Or when the Twenty20 starts!

  10. Eng 80-1published at 13:54 British Summer Time 2 August 2019

    Burns 49, Root 12

Joe Root has been out there for 61 deliveries now and a single gives him just his 12th run.

Peter Siddle plonks the ball onto a good length again and again and then throws his hands onto his head when Burns inside edges for one to keep the strike.

It's the kind of wicket you have to work really hard to get runs on.

Burns has only scored two fifties in his 14 Test innings. This'd be an ideal time to add a third.

It's so important that Burns, when he does get a semi-bad ball, he puts it away. That was perfect placement. It wasn't that short.

    Shot!

Too short from Nathan Lyon and Rory Burns crunches it off the back foot for four to move to 48.

Nathan Lyon has looked the most threatening, particularly against left-hander Rory Burns.

Burns has played with a lot better technique than we saw against Ireland. His hands are close to his body and he's had a good game plan. He's made the bowlers bowl straight and when they have, he's clipped them through the off side.

That's good running from Root, and England are up and running after lunch.

  20. Eng 74-1published at 30 overs

    Burns 44, Root 11

Another one not quite off the middle of Burns' bat but it's safe enough. Soft hands ensure the ball goes down, out of the reach of the packed slip cordon, and down to third man for three.

The runs bring up the fifty partnership between these two. Burns has contributed 32 of those runs. Well batted.
