That's an excellent and slightly depressing stat.

Chris Philcox: Now this is proper Test cricket. Disciplined nagging lines from bowlers and digging in from the batsmen.

Nathan Lyon's field has spread a little now. That means England can steal three singles. The hosts are heading towards the dreamy heights of 100-1. We don't get to say that too often these days.

That four that Root hit off Lyon was from his 71st ball - that's the third longest he's waited before hitting a boundary in a Test innings.
Burns 53, Root 22
I'm with the rest of you.
Root reverts to his solid defence, blocking out Siddle's accurate over. The Aussie bowler still looks very grumpy. England are nudging along.

Oh Hoop, one day you'll learn that this IS cricket and that T20 nonsense you love so much is just that, nonsense. Guess you'll be watching the Hundred too?
Jimmy in Bracknell
Went to T20 last night - result wasn't in doubt after 25 overs. This Test will be in balance for days. That's exciting cricket.

Hoop got in touch with us earlier, suggesting this is boring cricket (see 13:55). It's fair to say not many of you agree...

Zeb Bowyer: These umpires need to go to Specsavers. Ten incorrect decisions, appalling officiating.
Harrison Short: Will this dreadful umpiring performance by reviewed by the umpiring powers that be?

Root is now finally into the twenties.
Don't forget about this life he got earlier...

That's good foot movement. You know you can use your feet and go with the spin. You don't see that sort of mistake in the field too often though.

Pat Cummins skidded along there and couldn't control the ball.
A boundary for Joe Root with the help of some ropey fielding on the boundary from Pat Cummins. It shouldn't have got there but it's the first time Root has hit a four or a six in this innings.

For the paranoid, England have avoided the follow-on.

That review has woken the crowd up. There's now a chant of 'It's all gone quiet over there'.
The worry for Root though is that 'wicket' was exactly how teams fancy getting him out these days. Wide of the crease, angled into the pads, nip off the pitch and trapping him in front.
The tiny tickle on the inside edge means he survives.

That's the fifth overturned decision of nine reviews in the game.

It's getting to the stage where, if you're given out, you just review it. Aleem Dar is having one of those weeks.
Cries of "Rooooooot" ring around Edgbaston.
It's another decision from the umpires which is overturned.
But there's a spike!
Michael Vaughan

He reviewed it straight away.
