England have had a little bit of luck though.

Rory Burns would have been out lbw to Nathan Lyon had Australia reviewed.

Joe Root also survived despite the balls hitting his stumps. Thankfully for the England captain the bails were unmoved.

England lost Jason Roy early in that session but since they have battled really well.

Rory Burns has hardly set the world alight in his Test career but this has been one of his most impressive knocks.

    Thanks Amy!

That session was very different to yesterday's hectic, full-on day's play. It was still just as engrossing, however. It's why we love Test cricket.

    England's morning.

I wonder if Mr Burns can emulate what Smithers did yesterday...

And Joe Root stoutly blocks it into the off side!

He goes to lunch on 11, Rory Burns on 41, and England trail by 213 runs for the loss of just one wicket.

Rory Burns nurdles a single off his hip before Joe Root tucks himself under a bouncer that skims across his body.

    Last ball before lunch...

Rory Burns played grade cricket in Sydney in 2013-14 for Randwick Petersham, the same club as David Warner and Usman Khawaja.

In Warner's one game that season, Burns wasn't playing, but Jason Roy was part of the opposition.

Nathan Lyon has hustled through this over so quickly that we're going to squeeze one more in before lunch.

There's definitely turn there for Nathan Lyon, and just the odd delivery keeps low... oh, I don't fancy batting last on this.

Joe Root goes down to sweep, misses, and Lyon turns, pleading for the lbw. Aleem Dar shakes his head. Outside the line?

Time for another over before lunch, is it?

The World Cup was very exciting but this is what we've been waiting for. The gentle hum of a test match crowd. Watchful batting. The war of attrition keeping us glued to the live text. Perfect.

    Burns 40, Root 11

Rory Burns follows up that four with a textbook leave outside off stump.

Anything tight to his body or on off stump and Rory Burns has played it very well. It's just on that fourth or fifth stump line that he can look a bit vulnerable.

A good stroke by Rory Burns. He's looked very solid today.

    Shot!

Oh, that's great timing from Rory Burns. He gets forward and punches this latest Pat Cummins delivery back past the bowler, well wide of Cummins' outstretched hand, and picks up four.
