Is Smith ruining the Ashes?published at 13:22 British Summer Time 17 August 2019

Not to sound bitter but Steve Smith is ruining this series for me. It's one thing to watch a classical dominating batsman like Ricky Ponting or Michael Clarke bat for a couple of days. But watching Smith twitch and fidget all day while walking across his stumps and working everything to leg is just mind numbing.

Following yesterday's rain which wiped out the final two sessions, there was sunshine this morning as Smith resumed on 13 with Australia on 80-4. There were the usual mannerisms, maybe even some new ones, but also some highly impressive strokes. Apologies again to our overseas friends that the clips are UK only.

Talking of that legendary pavilion, I've been reading about Albert Trott, still the only man to have hit the ball over it - in 1899. What an incredible life he had., external

No sixes in that session but methodical innings building from the Australians, Smith in particular of course, 75 runs added in the 27.5 overs for the loss of just one wicket. Let's have a look at the highlights.

Here's what they are enjoying in that famous old pavilion this lunchtime. What a great experience for the local schoolchildren to be in there during the World Cup. Still hoping to see the Long Room myself one day, I have some old cricket pictures I hope they might be interested in.

Thanks Hooray, he's away to focus on the Black Cats against Portsmouth. Glutton for punishment? It's Black Cat Appreciation Day though today, apparently.

Miles Jupp is today's View from the Boundary guest on TMS, the former Balamory favourite - bet he enjoys always being reminded of that, like Richard Wilson's "I Don't Believe it". But I absolutely loved Balamory. Set in Tobermory wasn't it? Definitely like to go there one day.

It's View from the Boundary time on TMS.

I'm off to sit in a dark room in the hope I won't be able to see Steve Smith batting there.

Jamie Lillywhite is taking over from me.

This morning, England had a great opportunity to roll through, and they had the conditions to do it. It looks like the Australians are really set here.

Smith pops his gloves and helmet by the boundary rope and then gets a round of applause from the Long Room.

He'll be ready to go again after lunch.

England's hopes of winning this Test are dwindling.

Ben Stokes will bowl the last over before lunch. It looks like Stokes is going to bowl short at Paine.

I heard Greg James posing the question on Tailenders whether England had given Smith too much respect. They have been very complimentary of him over the last few weeks. Does it make a difference?

Sam in Leeds: It's almost as if England have the shocking mentality that they CAN'T get Smith out. The way they are acting. It's as if it's inevitable he will be 248*.

Alan in Lincoln: I don't know why England are focusing their efforts on Smith. He's always vulnerable in the 140's.

Steve Smith's fifty came from 107 balls with six fours in 182 minutes. He's the first player from either England or Australia to get a fifty in seven consecutive Ashes innings. Mike Hussey did it in six innings.

Steve Smith has a problem against left-arm side? Doesn't look like it.

He takes a few steps down the pitch and clobbers Jack Leach for four.

That takes Smith to his fifty. Again.
