Just over 10 minutes to go until lunch. Stuart Broad said yesterday that England were hoping to bowl Australia out by the interval. I think we can safely say that's not going to happen.

That's an incredible shot. He went back and across, stayed in that position, and somehow played a full delivery for four with his weight going backwards. How do you teach that?
Worrying time now for England. Steve Smith drives Ben Stokes for four. England don't really look like taking a wicket.

A misfield from Stuart Broad allows Smith to get off strike.
Leach then has Paine to bowl at and there's a strangled appeal for lbw. An inside edge means England decide against a review but if there was a silly point...

kimchi tom: Aussies (Smith mainly) to bat all day, declare two overs in tomorrow morning and force to England to bat all day to save the Test, which would be interesting.
Leach to Smith for the first time...
The most solid of defensive strokes.

It looks like there's a little bit of turn there for Jack Leach. He'll have enjoyed getting that first over out of the way and letting the nerves settle.
Smith 38, Paine 20
Ben Stokes is another one who has bowled a lot at Steve Smith's in the nets. They were team-mates this year at the Royals.
Stokes gets one to bounce, hitting Smith's glove and the Australian stares down at the pitch. Stokes has a friendly chuckle. It has been a pretty friendly Ashes series so far on the pitch.

That's the control that was missing from England's attack at Edgbaston.
Double change. Ben Stokes is on.
Tidy start from Jack Leach. It's a maiden. Tim Paine sees all six balls all off. We'll have to wait for the Leach v Smith battle.

For now it's Tim Paine on strike. A hint of turn from Leach's first ball.

Here we go! Jack Leach is coming on from the other end.
A lot has been made about how Smith's average against left-arm spin is far worse than his average against other types of bowling.

Good luck being a keeper. That one went straight and it swung away from Jonny Bairstow after it passed the stumps.
It's sunny too. You can see why Joe Root has chose not to bowl Leach so far, because of the seam bowling conditions. It might be Leach time.
Jofra Archer is not happy that Jonny Bairstow has spilled one and allowed Paine to get off strike with a bye. It did swing horribly after the bat.

It's the right time for the left-arm spinner to come into the attack. There are some footholes outside the left-hander's off stump.
Archer is going to bowl at least one more over. Jack Leach has to wait.

Ben Stokes had to go for the run-out. Jofra Archer just couldn't get there.
