Josh Verrils: Credit where it is due, Broad had a few question marks of his place in the Test team coming into The Ashes; has risen to the occasion in Anderson’s absence of being England’s most senior bowler. Bowling better than he has done in a long time for England.

The announcer has just asked John Barnes to report to the head steward's office. Apparently New Order are there and need him to rap.

It's time for drinks. Australia will be the happier after losing just the one wicket in the first hour. The biggest question currently troubling the nation continues. How do you get Steve Smith out?

Callum in Cardiff: Something that I have loved watching in England's bowling innings is the interaction between Broad and Archer. Archer eager to learn from Broad but you can imagine Broad getting some stuff back as well.

  8. Aus 119-5published at 50.4 overs

There's just a little bit happening for Archer here. Swing but too much of it and Jonny Bairstow can't stop four byes.

When you have someone who can bowl fast, it's a gift. You can learn the skills of in and out with a ball, but not everybody can bowl fast.

A change of ends for Jofra Archer. He's starting another spell from the Nursery End.

His first delivery hits Tim Paine on the thigh pad. There's an appeal from behind the stumps but not a lot from Archer. Too high.

Paul in Bristol: Yesterday it was noted that Smith leaves balls bowled on the line of the notional 5th stump. So keep bowling there and he doesn't score while we keep knocking over the batsman at the other end.

A thick edge from Smith, two more runs to his total.

The record for most hundreds in a row is five innings by the way, if you're just starting to fear Smith will do it again.

David: Steve Smith. A man you love to hate but hate to love watching him. He’s an absolute machine. He could honestly get 1000 runs this series.

Too short so far from Woakes.

I'm at the back of the Warner Stand. A group of young men, one of them with a toddler in his arms, had the temerity to stop in front of a chap in a white suit, temporarily blocking his view. The white suit jabbed one of them between the shoulders, then chuntered until they moved. Speaking of men carrying children, I saw Tom Daley and his son on the tube last night.

Owen: Tend to agree with John from London, but... if we get 10 out, Smith can't bat on his own. Keep him off strike and skittle his mates out. Easy.

    Smith 29, Paine 6

I think we all have to just accept that Smith is going to score at least 50 in every innings.

They still haven't bowled straight to a leg side field, they still haven't got round the wicket to Smith... they've carried on bowling the same way as they did as Edgbaston.

Stuart Broad cannot believe he hasn't got Steve Smith out. This is another excellent delivery. It is full, nips back and almost hits Smith on the pad. Smith gets bat on it though and it gets him another single.

Broad is crouched halfway down the pitch in disbelief. Even Smith thinks he got a little lucky, having a little chuckle and patting Broad on the back as he runs down the pitch.
