But that's four. Fuller from Archer and Paine plays with soft hands and an open bat face, guiding the ball to the third man boundary. He's off the mark with a four.

Chris Woakes picks up the ball at the end of the over and gives it a rub on his trousers. Woakes is out there.

  2. Aus 103-5published at 47.4 overs

Tim Paine still can't get away. He tries to pull Archer and gets a bottom edge down onto his toes.

I would have bowled Woakes from this Nursery End, and Archer from the other, so he's going in to the batsman.

Senior, Fillongley: Why is Woakes so underused by Root, both with bat but particularly ball? What other international captain would not bowl a strike bowler with an average of 9 in this situation?

Jofra Archer continues. We're still yet to see Chris Woakes in these overcast conditions.

It's obvious watching Paine bat that he doesn't like pressure on that bottom hand. He's always taking it off the bat.

  7. Aus 102-5published at 47 overs

    Trail by 156

Like Matthew Wade before him, Tim Paine is playing very cautiously early on. He's just getting on the front foot and pushing Broad back down the pitch.

A maiden. Three in a row that is.

    England needed this...

  9. Aus 102-5published at 46 overs

    Smith 27, Paine 0

Archer tries the bouncer to Smith but gets the line wrong. Smith ducks out of the way easily.

John in London: The sad thing about that wicket is I'm not even excited. Until Smith goes they can be 9 down and I won't care!

  11. Aus 102-5published at 45.4 overs

That's the worst shot I've seen Steve Smith play in a long, long time. It is short and very wide from Archer but Smith chases it and misses.

The England players can't quite believe Smith has done it. The Aussie shakes his head furiously.

Stuart Broad has moved level with Jimmy Anderson for wickets against Australia, they have both got 104 and Broad has a better record, doing it in 29 Tests to Anderson's 32 Tests.

Tim Paine lets his first four deliveries go by outside off.

The lights are on at Lord's. Whisper it quietly but these are nice conditions to bowl in.

  14. Aus 102-5published at 44.5 overs

Stuart Broad has three wickets in this innings now. He took five in the first innings of the last match.

Can he just play for England in Ashes series forever?

I thought like yesterday England bowled quite well with a fair amount of discipline. It is a good pitch for batting but there is just enough to encourage the bowlers all the time.

Specialist nice man Tim Paine is in for Australia.

Went to push it and a great catch at third slip. They needed it, heads were just going down but that's given them a little lift. England on top here, if they could just sneak one or two more they will be right in this Test match.

    Wade c Burns b Broad 6 (Aus 102-5)

You can thank me for that one later! England have their breakthrough.

Matthew Wade's scratchy innings ends as he slices an edge to Rory Burns in a fourth slip position. It nearly didn't carry but Burns gets his fingers under the ball.

England's spirits are lifted by Stuart Broad.

Half an hour gone and no wickets for England. Australia are winning the 'big first hour'.

I would have been tempted to have a look at Chris Woakes, with an average of nine here. I think they missed out on that yesterday. You could have rotated Broad and Archer.
