More hands are planted onto English heads when Smith steps across and flicks the ball from infront of the stumps into the leg side. You feel like you're in the game when he plays that shot but he just doesn't miss it. Ever.

Wade is hit on the body again by Archer at the end of the over. Get a short leg in!

That's the only shot Smith doesn't look so comfortable on, that sort of thrust forward defence outside the off stump.

  3. Aus 100-4published at 43.3 overs

Jofra Archer plugs away at around 87mph. Smith isn't doing anything as eccentric in this over. Is that a sign he really wants to knuckle down against Archer?

Jofra Archer to Steve Smith now...

Ian in Hawes: Do we not need a left hand paceman slanting the ball across Smith... or shooting one back .... no doubt Smith would still work it out but we need options.

This was Steve Smith doing his best Colin Jackson impression after turning down a single a couple of overs ago.

    Really, really odd.

Matthew Wade still isn't happy with that hand. He's taken his glove off at the non-striker's end and is giving it a good shake.

Smith nudges one again to take Australia to 100.

  9. Aus 99-4published at 42 overs

    Smith 25, Wade 6

That's what England want from Archer. The final delivery bounces, catches Wade on the glove and has the left-hander pulling his hand away like he's touched a hot hob in the kitchen.

The ball would have gone straight to a square leg but England don't have anyone in that position.

Small Man Peaky: Can someone please explain why England don’t have a fielder at square leg to cut off Smith’s flick off the hips? Maybe I’m missing something but why bother having a man square on the legside boundary? Smith is very happy just picking off singles and twos.

Archer has been a team-mate of both of these batsman in T20 leagues. He played with Smith in the IPL and Wade in the Big Bash.

Archer's pace isn't up to his usual level yet.

Root has seen sense. Ben Stokes is taken out of the attack. Jofra Archer is coming on from the Nursery End.

Can he trouble Smith with his pace?

Stokes had to bowl first this morning, to send down five balls from an over that began last night. After that, why keep him on? Surely Smith et al would prefer to start against England's fourth seamer than Woakes or Archer?

Matthew Wade now on strike and he smacks away an excellent drive through mid-off. When I say 'through mid-off' I mean it. Jofra Archer should probably have stopped it but dives over the ball.

That brings up Wade's 1000th run in Test cricket and the group of yellow-capped Aussie fans in the crowd lead the applause.

It feels like something extraordinary, like an eclipse of the moon - Steve Smith has been beaten outside the off stump! Mark it down.

Oh! That's brilliant by Broad. Those troubled English expressions have turned to ones full of pain. It's the perfect delivery but rather than edging it Smith misses.

    Groans all around Lord's.
