  2. 'Time will tell' for Smith on Headingley

    Steve Smith on whether he will play at Headingley: "It’s a quick turnaround between Test matches. I’m going to be assessed over the next five or six days each day probably a couple of times a day to see how I’m feeling and progressing.

    "I’m hopeful I will be available for that Test match. Certainly up to the medical staff and we’ll have conversations, but it’s certainly an area of concern, concussion, and I want to be 100% fit.

    “I think I’ve got to be able to train probably a couple of days out then face fast bowling to make sure my reaction time and all that sort of stuff is in place. There’s a few tests I’ll have to tick off but I guess time will tell."

    There's a little girl, can't be much more than about nine months old, in her father's arms at the back of the Warner Stand. She has a jumper with '4' on the front and '6' on the back. When Bairstow hit that maximum, the dad held her in the air.

  10. Smith 'hopeful' of recovery for Headingley

    Australia batsman Steve Smith on how he felt yesterday: “Yesterday when I came off the ground, the results were normal. I passed all the tests and felt fine, felt normal, so I was allowed to go back out and bat.

    "Upon discussions with the team doctor and coach as well, they were both happy and I was comfortable as well. We were all happy and I was able to go out and continue batting.”

    On being ruled out of the Test: “With the tests that I’ve done and how I’ve woken up today, I think it’s the right decision. I’d obviously love to be out there trying to keep performing and try and help Australia win another Test match, but I think the right decision has been made.

    "I’ll obviously be monitored very closely over the next few days with a pretty quick turnaround in between Test matches and I’m hopeful that I can make a recovery and be okay for that.”

  12. 'I find it a bit clastrophobic'

    Steve Smith on not wearing the neck protection on his helmet: “I think I, along with a few of the other players, find it a little bit different, uncomfortable to what we’re used to. For me, I find it a bit claustrophobic when it’s on, I feel like I’m enclosed and not overly comfortable.

    "It’s certainly something I need to probably have a look at and perhaps try in the nets and see if I can find a way to get comfortable with it.”
