Australia will be thinking if they get a couple more wickets quickly then they are still in the game. There is still a lot of time.
Jos Buttler played nicely. It is good to see him batting with more confidence.

That is a big wicket because Jos Buttler was getting into his groove.

Only one man out there on the leg side boundary as Buttler takes on the hook and it has gone straight to him.

I think Nathan Lyon will be disappointed with the way he has bowled. I thought he would have come into the game more. Ben Stokes has played him nicely but Lyon just doesn't quite look sharp.

Lyon from the Nursery End, a huge splodge of sun cream across his nose. It looked like an edge from Stokes but it is spin out of the rough and a ricochet off the wicketkeeper's pad and a bye is given.

It is a tricky time for Joe Root. You don't want to give Australia a sniff of 2-0.

Sun out again at the Home of Cricket and Cummins tries a couple of short ones, Buttler decides to play out a watchful maiden.

The question now is whether Smith will be fit for the next Test at Headingley.
Australia batsman Steve Smith: "I started to feel a little bit of a headache coming on last night as the adrenaline I guess got out of my system. I was able to get a good sleep in, which is somewhat rare for me, but woke up feeling a little bit groggy and with a headache again.
"I had some tests done and upon some further assessment, deemed to be a mild concussion, unfortunately, and I've been ruled out for the rest of this Test match.
"They've declined a little bit. We did a test this morning here at the ground and did one last night and the results changed slightly. Unfortunately that and how I'm feeling have contributed to me being ruled out for the rest of the Test."
A little overcast as the players take the field. We'll hear from Steve Smith in a few moments, he says he has "mild concussion". Buttler to take strike to Cummins from the Pavilion End.
So for you to plan when to get the dinner in the oven and hail down the ice cream man etc the revised playing regulations following the delayed start at 12:10 BST are: afternoon session from 14:10-16:40, final session 17:00-19:00. Here come the umpires.
So let's recap here, Steve Smith will play no further part in this match after that horrific injury yesterday - and his appearance for Thursday's third Test at Headingley is open to question.
The exotically-named South African-born Marnus Labuschagne is the first concussion replacement in the 142-year history of Test cricket and he is permitted to bat and bowl. This is his sixth Test and he has a top score of 81, also claiming nine wickets with his leg-spin.

Big Pete: Bairstow as captain would be a mistake. He's not a leader. Either give it to Stokes or bring in a specialist captain who can bat.
Stokes completed fifty from 106 balls - his second half-century of the series - and has 51 from 112 balls, Buttler with 31 from 96.
Jos Buttler took more than 70 deliveries to strike his first boundary, the longest spell of his Test career but the fifty partnership with Stokes arrived from 143 balls.

Ian Clarke: I think Stokes has shown he has the temperament to bat at 4. Maybe even 3. Root to open with Burns. Move Roy to 5. And make Bairstow captain. Allowing Root to come out with a clear head and nothing to think about but scoring runs!
Anticipointment at the start of the day wasn't there? Rain delaying the start until 12:10 BST as England resumed on 96-4, 104 ahead. Could have been worse, there was no play before lunch down at the oldest county in Hove. Quiet accumulation for England to start, before Ben Stokes began to find his rhythm.

Mark Rose: I agree with Ian (13:24). If this match is drawn Australia will need to win just one of the last three Tests to retain the Ashes. With our fragile top order one collapse in any of those matches could result in the urn staying down under.
Ian Jones: Got to be brave and look to accelerate quickly after lunch, get them in for good number of overs.
