This is now Buttler's highest score of the series. It's good to see him looking more solid at the crease, even if not at his fluent best.

I get the sense Stokes and Buttler love batting together. They have a smiley chat at the end of the over.

This is a big innings for Jos Buttler. He's not found his rhythm in terms of scoring but he's shown some good defence and some judgement.

That was Jos Buttler's first four, off the 74th ball he faced - that's the longest it's taken him in Test cricket.

  5. Eng 128-4published at 45.3 overs

Shot! That's what Jos Buttler has been trying to do. He drives Lyon beautifully through the covers and doesn't even both running. Much better.

    Remarkably that's Buttler's first boundary.

I think they'd be silly not to give Australia 45, 50 overs to bat, especially with the fragility of their batting and no Steve Smith. On this kind of wicket they could easily be 10-3.

There are 76 overs left in the day. England have only been scoring at two runs an over this morning.

They'll surely want at least a 200 lead before declaring. Absolute minimum.

That's still a long way away at this pace. They might only have 30-odd overs to bowl at Australia.

On a day when play was delayed for 70 minutes, when we finally do get out there, why do we then have to stop for lunch 80 minutes later?

  9. Eng 121-4published at 44.1 overs

Buttler has 15 from 70 balls. He may not be scoring but this partnership is now worth 50. England would have been in massive trouble without it last night.

Emma in Putney: Jos Buttler is struggling here....trying to find form, but can't seem to get it off the square. Strike rate of under 20 very unlike Jos...

  11. Eng 120-4published at 44 overs

    Stokes 35, Lyon 15

This is certainly not one of Jos Buttler's most fluent innings. He goes for another aggressive shot off Lyon but the ball just dribbles to short leg.

Noel Pedersen: Like-for-like concussion sub is Steve Waugh, and he’s sitting right there on the balcony. He’d dig in like Smith did.

Dr Felix: How come Smith gets a substitute for a blow to the head but England had to play with 10 after Jimmy did his calf? Makes no sense does it. It's nonsensical. Nonsense.

Josh Hazlewood is doing an economical job for Australia. He's not conceding many runs. The WinViz has the draw as comfortably the most likely result.

Daniel in London: Never nice to lose a world class player like Smith but with him out the side surely England have got to go for this. High risk, high reward. Would like to see us push on before lunch.

We've still got 50 minutes to go until lunch remember after the delayed start. The lunch break has been pushed back. Bad news for me. I'm starving.

Buttler nabs a single off Hazlewood.

Paul Patten: Bat one hour after lunch, get them in....a 180-ish lead is enough....get the Aussies back in, without Smith they will cave....rather lose than draw.

Ben Stokes has done almost all of the scoring this morning...

  19. Eng 117-4published at 42 overs

Oooo. Good delivery from Nathan Lyon. He looks a little frustrated. Ben Stokes is beaten all ends up but the ball just miss off stump.

  20. Eng 117-4published at 41.2 overs

Four more to Ben Stokes. Is it his day? This is another edge but well wide of David Warner at slip. It was never a chance of a catch.

Bowler Nathan Lyon looks upwards in dismay.
