They've burnt one. You'd think they'd have learned that in the last Test.
Pat Cummins likes this. He's smashed Joe Root on the back pad, and Tim Paine, at the last second, sends it upstairs.
"They've burnt a review..." mutters Glenn McGrath.

That was the chance the Australians needed to take. Keeper and slip stand really wide. That was keeper's catch.

A well-timed sweep from Rory Burns adds four runs to the total, while Nathan Lyon ruefully chomps down on his chewing gum.
A beach ball has flown on to the field. Lyon is getting jeered every time he moves. The sun's out. The Ashes is great.

I think you want both blokes going for it rather than none.
I reckon Tim Paine could have got to that edge if he dived, you know. Bizarre that neither keeper or slip made a move for it.

Cummins has deserved more than he has got.
Four! A cracking shot from Joe Root, leaning into a drive and forcing the ball through point and to the boundary, where Marcus Harris almost face-plants into the rope as he tries to drag the ball back in.
Oh, that's a genuine edge - and it'll be four! It's absolutely flown off Root's outside edge and it's gone between Tim Paine and David Warner, neither of who moved a muscle! Warner's smiling, Cummins looks like he wants to kick something.

Root's fifty came off 117 balls, with seven fours. He has scored 574 runs at an average of 114.8 in eight Test innings at Old Trafford.

Are we sure Steve Smith isn't inflatable? His batting takes my breath away. (I am sorry.)
Steve
My daughter wanted a bouncy castle for her birthday. The guy said the rental was £50 and the set-up fee was $1000. I said, “That’s outrageous!” He just shrugged and said, “That’s inflation for you.”

If someone sneezes near Nathan Lyon this week, he'd be well advised to catch the cold.
Root 50, Burns 69
Nathan Lyon has had better days.

A very, very modest acknowledgement from Root, who's looking very stern-faced. He knows he's got a lot of work to do.
Cries of 'Roooot' ring out across Old Trafford as the England captain works a single to reach his half-century.
He acknowledges it with a quiet wave of the bat. He's not done yet.
Too short again from Nathan Lyon, who is not having a happy day, and he is firmly, crisply, cut away for one by Rory Burns.
Are you ready for some more of this?
Another stonker from Pat Cummins zips past Joe Root's outside edge as he pushes forward in defence.
