Jonny Bairstow tucks it through mid-wicket for a couple and that takes him to 4,000 Test runs.
A break in play as Australia inquire about the state of the ball. Through the hoops it goes and no new cherry will be forthcoming.
Now Jonny Bairstow wants a new bat.
All good? Right. Play can resume...
Shot!

Jonny Bairstow needs a score. I can see his movement is a little better than it was at the start of the series, a little more control, and his hands are tighter and closer to his body. This is the perfect opportunity - you have to really capitalise as a middle-order player.
Jonny Bairstow driving at gently curling Mitch Marsh's outswingers may be testing the nerves of some England fans.
He picks out a fielder twice but connects well last up and slices through a gap in front of point for four.
He's got to be careful but he played that nicely, under his eyes.
Root 50, Bairstow 10
Joe Root defends the rest of Peter Siddle's over.

Good applause for Joe Root's half-century and he acknowledges it with a polite wave of the bat. He's not done yet.
Talking of those three lives...

Joe Root is 50-3! He's still there, though, and that's the main thing.
Joe Root works off his pads for a couple to take him to 50 off 105 balls.
Not the most fluent innings and he is extremely fortunate to still be there after those three drops.
But can he cash in? Not many demons in the deck. If you were ever going to convert...
Root 48, Bairstow 10
Joe Root taps a single and Jonny Bairstow can leave or defend the rest of Mitch Marsh's over.

Why such negativity from everyone? Yes some poor shots but I think most of us would've bitten an arm off to be 145-3 at the start of the day! Frankly that's 100 more than we usually have at this point.

If England keep making mistakes, you could easily see them being 200-6. This wicket, to me, looks like a 350, 400 wicket. It is an absolute beauty.
Ah, so perhaps Tim Paine just fancied being part of an obscure cricket stat down the line. A real legacy.
Andrew Samson
BBC Test Match Special statistician
In 142 Tests at The Oval, only three teams have won the toss, bowled, and won the match.

Peter Siddle looks like he's short of a gallop and a bit of buzz in the legs.
Jonny Bairstow would very much like to play his way back into the form by facing Peter Siddle as much as possible.
Michael Vaughan

Nice shot, but that's a terrible delivery from Siddle. It was short and sat up for Bairstow to give it a whack. Paine must be thinking now "why did I bowl - and why did I get rid of Mitchell Starc?"
Peter Siddle has changed ends. It's not going any better.
Short and wide and Jonny Bairstow crashes it away square for four more.

That was a floaty half-volley.
