That is nowhere near a delivery you should be driving. Australia want and need England to make mistakes. They make the conditions irrelevant. That's a poor shot.

    Denly c Smith b Cummins 14 (Eng 27-1)

    Not good.

Pat Cummins goes a little fuller and Joe Denly pushes unnecessarily at a wide ball. The ball takes his edge and goes to Steve Smith who juggles before clinging on to the catch at the second attempt.

    It had been coming...

I wonder how much say Smith and Warner had in the toss decision. I never spoke to the opening batsmen, especially those out of form like Warner.

The ball-tracking shows it was going over. There's a bit of bounce in this pitch.

It's the ball which nips back which is looking threatening to Joe Denly.

Big appeal for lbw! The ball nips back off the pitch and hits Denly's back thigh. Pat Cummins likes it a lot but Tim Paine seems to think it was sneaking over.

If Peter Siddle was brought on to introduce control early on, he doesn't quite do it. Short and wide and Denly climbs in.

An early bowling change. Peter Siddle is on in place of Josh Hazlewood already.

Peaky: This Australia bowling attack will (fitness permitting) largely be intact for the 2021/22 Ashes. In the same vein, England's current batting issues will still be present in 2021. Cue, even more carnage than 2013/14. It's not going to be pretty.

  10. Eng 24-0published at 7 overs

Stop the press. Pat Cummins has bowled a bad ball. Burns flicks it off his hip down to fine leg for four. When do I open my bookmarked page - 'England's highest opening partnerships since the retirement of Andrew Strauss'?

  11. Eng 20-0published at 6.4 overs

Pat Cummins has sensationally blue eyes. They give Burns an up and down look that says "play that" after another lovely delivery.

    Burns 9, Denly 11

Australia look a little confused as to how they have not got a wicket. Burns inside edges past his stumps and then Joe Denly goes for a silly drive to a wide delivery. The ball slices off his edge and goes between two fielders.

England are rattling along at 3.33 runs an over!

Can you please tell me why when a team vociferously appeals for a catch or an LBW and are that confident, why they don’t then review (if they have a review left) if the umpire does not give the batsman out? Are they just chancing their arm in the hope that the umpire will give the batsman out? If they are that convinced, why not ask for a review?

Shot! A dipping inswinger from Josh Hazlewood is driven through mid-on for four.

    England's early scare...

  17. Eng 11-0published at 5 overs

    Burns 4, Denly 7

The only runs Denly scored in that over came when he tried to leave the ball and got an unintentional edge down to third man. He got a proper working over by Pat Cummins, not for the first time this summer.

  18. Eng 11-0published at 4.4 overs

That's the problem for England. Whether you agree with Francis or not, in some ways they are damned if they do and damned if they don't.

More nervy moments for Joe Denly as he's beaten on the inside edge again.

Francis Edwards: Can tell already Root is going to make a 100 today. He always makes scores in the last game when the result is decided. Did against India and Windies. I know it’s 2-1 but pressure is off.

Jeeepers. Go hide behind the sofa somewhere.

This delivery from Pat Cummins rips through Joe Denly's gate and flicks the thigh pad. Tim Paine goes up for an appeal, certain that it was an edge, but when push comes to shove he does not review.
