Confused why some pundits think Denly's done enough in this series to persevere with. Not a selection for the future and whilst I can't fault his spirit/effort even when he has got runs he's been pretty lucky and played and missed a lot.

We've just been shown a pitch map of where all of the Australia bowlers have pitched the ball so far this morning. In the previous matches the dots have all been carefully positioned on a good length and a probing line. Not today. It looks like someone has spilled a box of bouncy balls.

Peter Siddle has bowled a lot of balls out here today...

Joe Root has flown out of the traps. This is his kind of pitch, with the ball skipping on.

A strange decision at the toss, some wayward bowling and now a horror misfield that goes for four. This has not been the Australia we have been used to so far. Peter Siddle has gone for 18 from three overs. Joe Root is rattling along.

I wonder if they will have to change these to The Smith Doors?

Peter Siddle is snarling even more than usual after his poor start. He drifts wide again and Joe Root chases it. It is a strange shot from Root and he's lucky not to edge through to the keeper.

I think it was the captain's gut feeling that he wanted to bowl first. I hear the coach - Justin Langer - was happy to bat.

The early nip and zip seems to have died down now. This looks a good pitch.

The pitch is playing nicely so far and Tim Paine's decision at the toss has given England an opportunity in this game.

Josh Hazlewood has changed ends, replacing the excellent Pat Cummins. The big Australia quick probes away but when he goes in search of an lbw, Rory Burns flicks off his pads for three.

Root is now on strike to Hazlewood who has dismissed him three times in not many balls so far in the series.

Matthew Venn: Ridiculously lucky catch there from Smith. Any other day that's a dropped catch.

And again! Same shot and same result from Joe Root. Peter Siddle has made a ropy start here. Too short and too wide for a bowler that is supposed to bring control. Mitchell Starc anyone?

Steven Green: Think that's the end for Denly, especially at his age when you need to build for next Ashes. Can dig in but hasn't taken his chance unfortunately.

The Aussies yelp for a catch but Joe Root gets four runs with a sliced shot through gully. It was in the gap but I don't think it would have carried anyway. Root was in control. I think.

If England bat well today, they should be in a strong position at the close. But you just never know how they're going to play.

That opening partnership was the highest opening stand of either team in the series. Every cloud.

It wasn't even the second attempt Smith took that catch. It was third or fourth. He has all the time in the world even when he is fielding.

Root was out first ball to Cummins last week but gets off the mark on his second ball here.

Even when Smith drops them, he catches them.

And now once again Australia have Joe Root out in the middle when the ball is still new.
