Chris Wheeler: Lots of talk on TMS about future opening batsmen, and talk of averages. The average I'd like discussed for them is average number of minutes at the crease, as what we need is batsmen who don't get out.

    Target 399

Steve Smith shapes to work Jack Leach round the corner but gets it a little closer to Jos Buttler at short leg than he'd ideally like. Safe enough though and he picks up a single.

Matthew Wade skips down the pitch, drives in to out through the covers and gets two.

Going forward, I like to see a Test match team where the top three could all open. That allows an engine room to come in and play.

    Curran 5-3-7-0

Sam Curran really tests Matthew Wade, beating his outside edge and finishing with a sharp bouncer in a fine maiden over.

Really impressive from Curran again. He's been noticeably more accurate in this Test.

When there is talk of Ben Foakes, the country's premier keeper, returning to the England side, moments of rapid glovework like that do Jonny Bairstow no harm at all.

  8. Aus 61-3published at 17 overs

Matthew Wade goes on the attack, quelle surprise, and clatters a firm sweep shot off Jack Leach to the fence for four.

A single to finish to keep the strike.

The Oval applaud Leach at the end of the over.

With Matthew Wade out there it is one of those moments you turn up the stump mic and have a listen.

    Here comes Matthew Wade.

A very quiet and reserved individual. Ahem.

That was a brilliant delivery from Jack Leach and fast hands behind the stumps from Bairstow.

Beautiful bowling. There was flight and guile which made Labuschagne prod forward. He got done in the air by Leach.

Massive wicket - Taxes is back in the hutch.

A gorgeous flighted delivery from Jack Leach, drawing Marnus Labuschagne forward and fizzing it past the outside edge.

Labuschagne's back foot slides out and hovers in the air as Jonny Bairstow gathers and knocks off the bails in one motion.

Fine bowling, fine keeping and England have removed Australia's second best batsman.

Jack Leach beats Marnus Labuschagne's outside edge and Jonny Bairstow whips off the bails.

England are certain they've got him.

    Umpire Dharmasena sends it upstairs.

    Curran 4-2-7-0

Steve Smith is squared up a tad by Sam Curran but slices it away safely.

Just a couple of singles as Curran continues his tidy work.

Chris Woakes is a superb cricketer. Hardly ever lets England down. Lethal when the ball is moving, useful lower-order runs. But, if there is only room for one of him or Sam Curran, does Curran edge it for the simple reason that his left-arm gives the attack a different dimension?
