All of the England top order got in today but they all got out.

That's ultimately what cost England. There was no one there to steer the chase home.

  2. Watch: Steve Smith hits a century to guide Australia to victorypublished at 18:57 British Summer Time 25 May 2019

So Australia win and not for the first time it is Steve Smith who is the hero. He rose above the boos and jeers to hit a fine century and set up Australia's victory.

England would have wanted to win. None of them were bowled out. They all got out. 10 batsmen had a chance to win the game and none of them did it. That will be a talking point in the debrief.

Joe L: For all the doomsayers and worrymongerers, take note! This was a game without Root or Morgan, and without their steadying influence we still were close.

Niall Owens: People are questioning England after that defeat They played 13 players and no runs scored or wickets taken count as the warm-ups don't carry ODI status. England aren't going to show their hand less than week away from the opening game

There is always a concern with Wood’s fitness because he doesn’t seem to stay fit for long. I am sure it was just precautionary. He didn’t look to be limping. I think England will just be wrapping him in cotton wool.

It looked like Vince was going along nicely today and just as we were waxing lyrical about him he guided one to short third man which put others under pressure and ultimately lost England the game.

What Smith did, I hope James Vince watched it.

Smith plundered England's bowling and then went on and on. Four or five England batsmen got in and didn't go on. He has shown a wise old head.

He didn't score quick enough in my opinion and in real World Cup game I think would have put foot down.

  7. Watch: Archer run out as England fall to defeatpublished at 18:45 British Summer Time 25 May 2019

It is difficult in games like this there are 22 people with different agendas. The early injury to Wood, the scare for Archer and the injury for Dawson will have meant people took their foot off the gas a little bit. Neither team could really find drive to treat it as a full international which is understandable. It is hard to do.

Well done Steve Smith. I did say he batted too slow but time showed it was a good innings.

  10. 'Steve Smith played a really impressive knock'published at 18:43 British Summer Time 25 May 2019

Australia captain Aaron Finch: "Our fielding was sloppy, it was not the standard we want to set for ourselves. But overall the way we batted was a good effort.

"It just shows the importance to have that in-batter. I thought Steve Smith played a really impressive knock.

"The wicket got a bit slower and drier. Nathan Lyon bowled a beautiful spell, great line and length. Overall it was a pretty good wicket, with just enough there for everyone."

On Jason Behrendorff: "He was impeccable with his new ball bowling, he can move the ball back to right-handers which is a great asset to have. To be able to challenge both edges is a real good quality. He bowled beautifully today, he is getting better and better."

Chris Podd: Lose a tight unofficial ODI without a couple of key players and the naysayers are out in force. Relax, when it matters we'll be ready.

  12. 'We're disappointed but we're in good shape'published at 18:37 British Summer Time 25 May 2019

England captain Jos Buttler: "There's been some good work for some of the bowlers - it was good to see Ben Stokes get overs in, Liam Plunkett took wickets and Tom Curran impressed with the new ball. We're disappointed not to win but we're in good shape."

  13. 'A lot of the guys got something out of it'published at 18:36 British Summer Time 25 May 2019

England batsman James Vince: "We’re disappointed not get over the line but it is a warm-up game and a lot of the guys got something out of it. The wicket was a bit two-paced but I managed to get a few runs to my name which was nice."

On Jos Buttler's innings: "He took all the pressure off us. He hit something like 50 off 30 balls to bring the rate back down to a run a ball. We should have kept a few more wickets in the hutch afterwards but that innings from Jos was outstanding.

On England's injuries: "I think all the injuries are pretty minor. I don’t know much about them but hopefully they will all be fine."

It was a glorified practice game but it was an important one for both teams. Lessons should be learnt. England were awful against Nathan Lyon. He bowled 30 dots. England didn't find a way manouvre him around on a wicket that didn't spin viciously. There is work to be done but they wont read too much into it.
