Virat had been watching this match 'Emperor-like' with hands on hips on his feet high up in the dressing room, glaring down at the scene below him.

Now he has the perfect view of his opener Shaikhar Dhawan playing a beautiful cover drive for four.

    Thanks Tom.

Here's the one wicket Australia have taken, the dismissal of Rohit Sharma from a few moments ago.

It was much needed for the Aussies but it has brought Virat Kohli to the crease.

  3. Ind 136-1published at 25 overs

Three singles complete the over as we reach the halfway stage with India in control.

Now it's time for me to hand over to Matthew Henry, who will see you through the remainder of the innings.

  4. Ind 132-1published at 24.1 overs

That's a wonderful take from Alex Carey as Shikhar Dhawan fends a Nathan Coulter-Nile delivery through to the Aussie wicketkeeper. There are stifled appeals but Coulter-Nile isn't interested and replays show it clipped Dhawan's thigh rather than the bat.

There are oodles of overs left to bat.

  6. Ind 132-1published at 24 overs

A slip is in place for Adam Zampa as he has a long conversation with Aaron Finch. What plans have they got for Virat Kohli?

He gets his first run with a nudge into the offside. Shikhar Dhawan then punches another delivery off the back foot for a single. Five off the over in total.

Always a man for a crisis... Virat Kohli in at 120-odd for one.

Not that Virat Kohli needs any inspiration - he might be the most competitive sportsman I've seen, bar Andy Murray - but he was annoyed to fall cheaply in his side's opening game against South Africa.

Aaron Finch also had a little nibble at the India skipper yesterday by saying he thinks Steve Smith is the best batsman in the world across all three formats, a tag that is usually slapped on Kohli. And let's be honest, we all want to see Starc and Cummins v Virat, don't we?

Virat Kohli has not been in the greatest form. In the IPL he struggled and against South Africa he didn't quite get going.

  10. Ind 127-1published at 23 overs

The cheers continue as Virat Kohli walks into the middle. He watches the rest of Nathan Coulter-Nile's over.

A chink of light for Australia, can they follow that up?

Rohit Sharma is surprised and add to that 20,000 people at the Oval. There is a deathly silence.

That was Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan's sixth century partnership against Australia. That ties the record for the most century partnerships against a single opponent. Gordon Greenidge and Desmond Haynes hit six against India.

Nathan Coulter-Nile 0-31 from his first four overs - is back...and he makes the breakthrough! He gets one to rise a bit off a length and Rohit Sharma gloves one through to the wicketkeeper.

The Oval is briefly stunned before huge cheers erupt as Rohit walks from the field. A fantastic innings and the perfect platform for India.

I think I have doubled the Australian support in this ground. I saw a few yellow shirts but they are MS Dhoni Chennai Super Kings shirts.

  15. Ind 127-0published at 22 overs

What can Adam Zampa do to stem the flow of runs? Not with deliveries like that. It's too short again but Shikhar Dhawan's pull is fielded on the mid-wicket boundary.

Dhawan slaps his pads in frustration, he feels he should have done better there. Still, six from the over and not much to fear for the Indian batsman.

I just tried to have a stroll around the ground. Big mistake. It is so packed that it's almost impossible to move. One of the World Cup helpers is having a mini game with a group of young India fans, which is being cheered just as much as the action on the field.

The Bharat Army are also making themselves known with the drums - and, pleasingly, they've created their own rendition of the Yaya/Kolo Toure tune, in honour of Dhawan and Rohit. Lovely stuff.

This is Rohit Sharma's 65th score of 50 or more in ODI cricket with 23 hundreds among those. It is his 14th 50-plus score in his past 28 innings.

  19. 121-0published at 21 overs

    Dhawan 63, Rohit 55

That's another lovely cover drive from Rohit Sharma but it is only worth two as the boundary rider comes round to cut it off. Rohit then works another two off his pads into the onside before a couple of singles complete the over.

India knocking it round at will at present.
