That is another lovely shot. Vince picked the gap nicely and that has forced a change in the field. That's another thing bowlers do when they have bowled a bad ball. They say: "oh the fielder was in the wrong position."

Lasith Malinga now strays onto the pads and James Vince crisply flicks it through mid-wicket for four more.

  3. Eng 22-1published at 6.2 overs

James Vince has just played an off drive so smooth you could spread it on a bread roll. Or whatever you call it.

    Four!

I've just been thrown out of the new stand for not having a ticket. That usually only happens at Lord's.

    Target 233

Tidy over from Nuwan Pradeep, conceding just a single and cutting Joe Root in half with one that nipped back in between bat and body on the angle.

I didn't face Malinga much but it got easier. I can't remember who told me but I was told to look at the umpire's hat and all of a sudden you see the ball come out from it. It makes it much easier.

It is such a strange action. You don't get a good view of the ball like you do with most bowlers

  7. Eng 15-1published at 5 overs

It's not coming onto the bat but James Vince and Joe Root are starting to get the measure of Lasith Malinga a bit better, picking up five off the over.

I don't think this will be as easy as everyone thought. It looks like the pitch is slowing up a lot.

  9. How's stat?!published at 14:49 British Summer Time 21 June 2019

That was only the fifth example of a batsman getting out in the first over of the innings at this World Cup; Bairstow is responsible for two of them (Thirimanne, Shahzad & Guptill).

Joe Root generally bats well here whether for Yorkshire or England.

When you come to a ground you are familiar with it makes you feel comfortable and relaxed and when you go to the middle you are more at ease with yourself.

  11. Eng 10-1published at 4 overs

Shot! Joe Root picks up England's first boundary of the innings, up on his toes and punching through point. Trademark.

He drives again on the up and this time chips it just short of cover. Plenty to ponder.

Haha and all that, but lost among James Vince's tendency to nick off for pretty 25s in Test cricket is the fact he's been an excellent batsman in List A cricket over the last few years and has often gone very big when making centuries.

I am fully aware that that could prove to be famous last words.

    England chasing 208. That's 233 minus Vince's 25.

    Krackers

  14. Eng 4-1published at 3 overs

    Vince 2, Root 2

It's testing out there. Lasith Malinga beats the edge of the bat again and James Vince has to play out a maiden.

Sri Lanka will need a lot more of that if they are to win this game. They are going to have to take a lot of wickets and getting Joe Root out will be high on their list of priorities.

England will want him to bat through.

  16. Eng 4-1published at 2 overs

I'm sure that stat will bring great comfort to Jonny.

James Vince pushes Nuwan Pradeep away for a single and Joe Root plays and misses at the last.

Something in this pitch for the bowlers. Still looks mainly a decent batting deck though.

The only opener other than Jonny Bairstow to be out first ball twice in one World Cup was Sri Lanka's Romesh Kaluwitharana in 1996 and the good news for England is they went on to win the tournament.

We saw this in the Sri Lanka innings. With the new ball there was a bit of bounce and carry and then it seemed to slow down as the innings went on.

  20. Eng 3-1published at 1 over

    Target 233

Joe Root gets off the mark, sending an edge along the ground through a gap in the cordon down to third man and he scampers two.
