Even if England lose this game, I'm still impressed that they were willing to scrap it out rather than sticking to their 'new brand' of cricket and getting bowled out for 120 on a very tricky pitch. No team in the world would bat easily and freely on this.

This is getting tense now. Lovely to see.

Ben Stokes is squared up by a sharp one from spinner Dhananjaya de Silva, tentatively prodded wide of the keeper who appeals for lbw for good measure.

Paul Nelson: We bat so far down this should still be a cruise!

Matt: Didn't New Zealand struggle to chase low totals against both Bangladesh and South Africa Kris?

Nothing in it whatsoever. After 35 overs Sri Lanka were on 158-5, England were 154-5.

    Target 233

This could be a key innings from Ben Stokes, closing in on 50 as he nudges a single out of the circle. England need 79 more. The sort of runs that Eoin Morgan was bringing up in the time it takes to watch Newsround the other day.

A week is a long time in cricket.

If you've got Bairstow, Root and Buttler in your wicket column, you can be rightly delighted and Malinga will be.

Beauty! Perera shapes one across the face of Moeen's bat. Strangled appeals. Hushed crowd. Safe.

These sorts of games are important for the development of a team. Poor wickets level the playing field between the teams and force players to scrap. If England are finally going to claim a trophy, these are the games they have to win.

A run a ball will do it from here but there is minimal room for error. Woakes, Archer, Rashid and Wood are the batters to come...

Excellent World Cup fever reactions coming in. Good to see.

Ben Stokes nurdles away a single to bring up the 150 - England need 82 from 90 balls. They are all going to count!

Kris Jefferson: Well if you need further proof that this England team shouldn’t be favourites, this batting performance shows it, couldn’t see India/Australia/New Zealand struggling with this total to chase.

Steve in Herts: You honestly believe this England side can beat Australia and India? No chance, England will barely scrape the semis.

England should just knock Malinga around, don't risk anything. He's been outstanding today.

    Malinga 4-37

Moeen gets up on his toes to nip a single away, Lasith Malinga is slinging down arrows and Ben Stokes defends it superbly.

The big man probably wasn't impressed at being sent out to bowl with only 233 on the books to defend but he's been brilliant.

I believe it's important before you get to a semi-final that you win a couple of tight games. It gives you belief you can get over the line.

A time for heroes now. England's World Cup campaign has gone fairly swimmingly up to now but defeat here would have them bailing out of a pedalo before you know it.

Still time and a small target to chase...

Shot Ben Stokes! Just a push and the giant left-hander finds the gap for a lovely boundary. Greeted with a relieved cheer from the stands.
