He had a finger injury of some kind but is fit to continue today.

Pakistan think they can do it. This freakiness of everything happening in the same sequence as 1992 is crazy. Maybe it is fate?!

  12. What does this mean for England?published at 10:15 British Summer Time 29 June 2019

For the second successive day, there was a result for England to cheer in the Cricket World Cup on Friday.

Following India's victory over West Indies on Thursday, it was South Africa who did the hosts a favour by beating Sri Lanka by nine wickets at Chester-le-Street.

And while Sri Lanka can still qualify for the semi-finals by finishing in the top four, they now need a lot of results to go in their favour.

Now, will be keeping a keen eye on Pakistan. If Pakistan win today, they will leapfrog England having played a game more.

England can return to the top four on Sunday if they beat India, who are the only unbeaten side in the competition.

    Pakistan fans

Invoking the spirit of 1992 outside the ground. Can they do it...? Although as one journo remarked to me this morning, it would be very Pakistan to beat England, South Africa and New Zealand, and then lose to Afghanistan...

  18. Class of 92published at 10:07 British Summer Time 29 June 2019

Pakistan come into the game still hoping to emulate their 1992 victory, when they came through to lift the World Cup in Melbourne despite winning only one of their opening five group games - a miserable start they matched this time around.

Then, three wins from their final three games propelled them into the semi-finals, and a repeat this year could well do the same.

They chalked one up against New Zealand. Number two on the board today?

Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed: "We wanted to bat but we are bowling well, we'll try and restrict them.

"Our momentum is very high. But we are only focusing on this match."

  20. Postpublished at 10:04 British Summer Time 29 June 2019

Afghanistan captain Gulbadin Naib: "The wicket looks good - the weather is nice and sunny and hopefully it will help the spinners later on. We beat Pakistan in a warm-up game so maybe we can do it again. We'll do our best to put a good total on the board."
