  1. 50 runs

50 for Careypublished at 35.4 overs

Not the cleanest way to get to fifty but Alex Carey gets there. It's an inside edge that goes near to off stump but out of the reach of Tom Latham along the ground. It runs for four.

It has taken Carey just 47 balls to reach the landmark. He has made batting look easy on this tricky pitch.

  2. Aus 164-5published at 35.1 overs

Speaking of Jimmy Neesham... He returns to the attack and is clubbed to the boundary. Again it's Alex Carey doing the damage. He moves to a very well played 47.

  3. Aus 160-5published at 35 overs

Tim Southee is out on the field as a substitute. How do New Zealand get him into this team if they get to the semi-finals? He's got to play, surely.

I like Ish Sodhi but does he drop back out? Can they do without De Grandhomme or Neesham?

  4. Aus 159-5published at 34.5 overs

What a strange day Martin Guptill is having in the field. He has taken a blinder and dropped two other chances.

Now he misses the chance to run out Usman Khawaja. The left-hander would have been half a yard short had Guptill hit with the throw.

  5. Aus 154-5published at 34 overs

Will Tim Paine be looking over his shoulder by the Ashes? Alex Carey is having a brilliant World Cup. He clatters De Grandhomme through mid-wicket for four.

The Aussies will still think they can get 250+ if these two stay in. That'd be a good score.

Two left handers in, its a good decision - Kane Williamson is a good bowler.

Good enough to snare 36 ODI wickets before today.

  7. Aus 150-5published at 33 overs

    Khawaja 54, Carey 36

There are no foot marks for Williamson to work with on this pristine pitch but he is still finding turn. The New Zealand quicks might want to consider bowling in their socks to lessen Nathan Lyon's impact later.

I bet it's great to see him bowling like this in a World Cup, Steve!

I love stories of international stars who have played in local league cricket. I spoke to a chap who had Desmond Haynes as a lodger back in the 1980s while Haynes was playing in the north east. Some of the all-time greats have played league cricket.

Lockie Ferguson was our overseas player at Finchampstead CC in Berkshire 2 seasons ago. He did not 'pull up any trees' while playing for us in the Home Counties League but massively improved in very short space of time especially his speed

  10. drinks break

    Aus 147-5published at 32 overs

    Khawaja 53, Carey 34

Another quiet over done and dusted.

Third umpire Michael Gough strides out with some drinks for his colleagues. I hope he's got some sun cream on his bald head.

The players are going to have a refreshing drink too.

It is roasting out there in the direct sunlight for this capacity crowd.

I don’t blame this lot out on the Nursery Ground for deciding to take a mid-afternoon break in the shade while sipping on a cold drink and following the action on the big screen.

Not quite Murray Mount at Wimbledon but maybe Neesham Nursery for today in honour of the New Zealand all-rounder’s performance so far?

  12. 50 runs

50 for Khawajapublished at 31.2 overs

Usman Khawaja reaches his fifty from his 80th delivery.

He's had two lives. Can he continue to make New Zealand pay?

  13. Aus 141-5published at 31 overs

That was a loose over from Usman Khawaja. He had seen the ball turn big and continued to grope outside off. That's a good opening over from Williamson. I wouldn't want to be facing Nathan Lyon on this later.

  14. Aus 139-5published at 30.2 overs

Black Caps skipper Kane Williamson brings himself on for a bowl...

Big turn! And an edge... But there's no slip.

Don't be so harsh on yourself, skip! Get a man in.

  15. Aus 136-5published at 30 overs

There is sweat dripping from the visor of Alex Carey's helmet. It's really warm out there at Lord's. The Aussies will be used to it of course.

Carey will catch Khawaja up before long. Again he hits the final ball of an over for four. He has 31 from 29 balls and looks to be batting on a different pitch to everyone else.

Alex Carey = a man in form.

  18. Aus 131-5published at 29 overs

    Khawaja 44, Carey 27

Ah. Lockie Ferguson spoils his good over with a leg-stump half-volley on the final ball. Alex Carey is still seeing it like a football and whips it away for four.

Absolute beauty. He had to pull the head back otherwise that was crashing into the helmet. Top nut.

  20. Aus 127-5published at 28.3 overs

How has Lockie Ferguson not already played 100 ODIs and 50 Tests for New Zealand? Where has he been?! The 28-year-old is rapid. He zips one past Alex Carey's nose at 92mph. The batsman avoids it pretty well.
