It was almost inevitable Steve Smith was going to score runs in that position. He's given Australia a fighting chance.

Smith run out (Buttler) 85 (Aus 217-8)

Out by a matter of inches!

The ball drops off Smith's body behind the stumps. The Aussie tries to steal a single but Buttler quickly gets to the ball, picks it up and fires down the stumps at the other end.

That could be crucial. Could that knock 20 runs off the Aussies total?

Jos Buttler you star! This is surely a run out? Steve Smith is already walking off.

I hope you're all ready for a horrific afternoon.

That's the 50 partnership up in 9.1 overs.

Now a top-edge from Starc lands safe. Another to the total. Another one run England are going to have to chase.

  7. Aus 215-7published at 46.3 overs

England have fielded well today. Liam Plunkett is the latest to dive on the boundary and prevent four.

It's still two to the Aussies. These runs are really annoying for England. It's going to be nervy.

  8. Aus 211-7published at 46.1 overs

Four overs left. Mark Wood fires in another yorker. It would have been curtains for Smith but he got an inside edge.

That is so frustrating for the bowler. You've done everything required and you just need the umpire to give it out.

  10. Not outpublished at 46 overs

That's a bit of bad luck for England. The ball tracking shows it would have hit a decent amount of the top of middle stump but it's only umpire's call.

    That means Smith survives.

No bat. I think it's going over.

Jos Buttler thought it was high. Maybe he got outside the line as well. It's very close but probably will be umpire's call.

    HOWZAT!

England fancy this to Steve Smith. It might have been a bit high.

    They review for lbw.

  14. Aus 209-7published at 45.5 overs

My heart sunk there. Mitchell Starc nails one. I thought it was four but it's straight to a fielder.

How much time have I spent watching England singularly failing to get Steve Smith out? He basically owns England, this is filling me with Ashes deja vu dread!

Paul 'working from home' in Croxley

A few people have left work today at different times for their children's sports day. Knowing very well I don't have any children, do you think I'd get away with a 'sports day trip' for the second innings?

Seriously, is anyone in the UK doing any work?!

  16. Aus 207-7published at 45.1 overs

This has been a really annoying innings from Mitchell Starc from an England perspective. He is finding the singles to give Smith the strike but has also hit a few boundaries.

He's like that niggly midfielder from your least favourite football team.
