  1. Aus 72-3published at 19.3 overs overs

Alex Carey doesn't cash in on a very short ball from Adil Rashid, a half-tracker which he only pulls for a miscued single. That leads to a fieldign change.

As a certain Mr Solo would say, I've got a bad feeling about this. Looking very comfortable for Australia now. Need some magic from England.

    Wood 0-20

Six off the over, Australia picking up pace now. Key to them is just keeping this partnership alive for as long as possible.

First thing this morning, even during the early carnage, Edgbaston was little more than half full. The empty seats are gradually being taken up - I think we must be up to at least 80%. The queues for the bars are healthy, spectators bustle in and out of the stands with a tray of chips in each hand. We're settled. Into the game.

Ashley Worthington: Saw Smith do this against West Indies in the group stage. Early batting collapse and he just stayed in and dragged them to a respectable score (which they defended). Hopefully this tweet jinxes him!

That was a very good pull shot. It was an 88mph ball and Smith made it look like it was medium pace.

  10. Aus 71-3published at 18.3 overs

Shot! Steve Smith is well set now, rocking back on to his heels to pull a bouncer from Mark Wood for four more.

    Carey 19, Smith 28

Just four from the Plunkett over, and these two have a 50 partnership...

I don't think it will be long until we see Adil Rashid.

  13. Aus 64-3published at 17.3 overs

This is starting to feel ominous from Steve Smith. I once did an entire 10-hour night shift that he batted through. A machine.

There was no foot movement from Smith. I am not sure he meant to hit it that square but because he was trying to hit it hard there was always the chance of it going for four.

    What a shot that is!

  16. Aus 62-3published at 17 overs

Mark Wood's over is tight and then with the last ball of it Steve Smith reaches out and toe ends a shot for four through backward point!

This is why Steve Smith is such a good player. He knew runs were irrelevant. He just had to get through that opening spell.

  18. Aus 56-3published at 16.3 overs

This is a key spell now. These two batsman look comfortable at the moemnt, that early pace and movement has just gone away for the bowlers.

The score predictor has Australia getting 259. Which would certainly be competitive.

That was a lovely shot. You could see the confidence it brought to Smith's next ball.

  20. Aus 55-3published at 16 overs

Liam Plunkett is into the attack. Shot! First ball after drinks is punched away for four by Steve Smith, straight down the ground. Shot of the day, that.

Another fine drive from Alex Carey this time, going for four? No! Jason Roy hauls it back.
