The cut won't hurt for Carey it will be the jaw on the other side near the ear which will be sore. Carey is still batting well. I think we will see him in the Ashes as a batter.

The score will be irrelevant in Australia's eyes at the moment. They will want these two to be at the crease in the 35th over and even if they are only 140-3 then they can launch.

  5. Aus 47-3published at 15 overs

Steve Smith looks to drive Mark Wood, gets a thick outside edge which squirrels away for a single.

  6. Aus 45-3published at 14.2 overs

Steve Smith has only managed to record one half-century in his last 10 ODI innings versus England, that 50 did come at Edgbaston however (56 in 2017); he’s been dismissed five times by Adil Rashid in this format, two more instances than any other bowler has managed.

    Get the spinner on?

Mark Wood continues for now, short and fast.

Steve Smith is so hard to bowl at. I would like Ben Stokes to be a little bit fuller. At 45-3 you want to be looking for another wicket. At this stage, attack.

  9. Aus 45-3published at 14 overs

    Carey 11, Smith 15

This could be the sight of the rest of the summer, Steve Smith looking awkward but accumulating runs and not getting out.

Possibly for the first time today we see the waving of an Australia flag or two. A little bit of confidence might be reappearing.

  12. Aus 41-3published at 13.3 overs

Shot! Steve Smith gets on to a short one from Ben Stokes and pulls him authoritatively for four. There's the first noise from the Aussie fans in the house at that boundary. A mini rebuild is under way.

The physio is putting a whole bandage around Alex Carey's head. I haven't seen this before.

Alex Carey is going to bat in a proper bandage now, his whole lower face is wrapped up. Looks like a Scooby Doo villian mid reveal.

The England fielding is backing up what has been a pretty poor first over from Mark Wood. He has been the first bowler who has looked a bit nervous.

  18. Aus 36-3published at 13 overs

A bit loose from Mark Wood, a couple of wides in his first over before Chris Woakes does well to save a four on the fence.

Ben Stokes then saves another four with a diving stop inside the circle! Great save. Wood could have gone for plenty here.

Another wide! Wood with a nervy start to his spell.

Alex Haworth: Cricket on in the background at work. By "in the background", I mean I'm fully concentrating on that and nothing else.

David Farrell: Really, I am working hard... Or is that hardly working...

C R Hoops: Feeling sick, but after missing yesterday, I’ve gone to work today as I’m too busy. Now really wishing I’d stayed at home with TMS on. What a start. Still nervous about what’s to come though.
