Bairstow is putting on a show for the crowd. He has made some brilliant stops.

    Run rate 4.48

Colin de Grandhomme strides out to join Tom Latham in the middle.

He flicks firmly off his pads round the corner to test Jonny Bairstow. Not much really tests Bairstow though as he makes another fine diving stop to prevent the boundary.

    What groin problem?

It is an amazing atmosphere. You can feel people getting excited.

These wickets are helping England. New Zealand were going along well but England have done well to peg things back.

England are just chipping. When they need a wicket they get one and stop New Zealand building too much momentum.

    Neesham c Root b Plunkett 19 (NZ 173-5)

Liam Plunkett. In. The. Middle. Overs.

A third scalp for Plunkett today as Jimmy Neesham tries to crack him over the top but miscues and the ball loops straight to Joe Root at mid on.

An off-cutter from the wily Plunkett, who has used his variations exceptionally well.

The Black Caps were having a bit of a flurry - can England stall them with that wicket?

Liam Plunkett is a tremendous story. A few years ago he was lost in his game. It is a great story to never give up.

  9. NZ 165-4published at 38.1 overs

New Zealand are trying to up the rate here.

Jimmy Neesham tries to bash Liam Plunkett over long on and is lucky to see the ball just slide past off stump.

Mark Wood is the worst type of quick bowler to face. His bouncer skids. You don't know how much it is going to bounce.

    Latham 22, Neesham 12

Jimmy Neesham just about ducks under a well-directed bumper from Mark Wood. Sharp.

England's fast bowling is suddenly looking very, very good for the Ashes.

  13. NZ 163-4published at 37.2 overs

Tom Latham with a sublime drive and the ball races down the slope and into the fence.

Terrific response from Mark Wood, just beating the outside edge on the angle from round the wicket.

Mark Wood is on for a seventh over.

    Can he strike again?

In a funny way, seeing New Zealand play these shots, it tells me the pitch is pretty good.

  16. NZ 159-4published at 37 overs

    Run rate 4.30

Tom Latham might try to slog his way into form here.

And it comes off, the Kiwi keeper picking up the length quickly and low-arm pulling it out towards the short boundary at deep backward square leg.

It looks like six at first but replays show it bounced just in front of the rope. Four!

    Liam Plunkett returns.

These are the middle overs after all.

When you are circumspect you can make a pitch look worse than it is. Neesham has come out and played nicely.

The great American sportswriter Wright Thompson was introduced to cricket when he went to cover the 2011 World Cup in India.

He wrote a wonderful series of articles about his experience of discovering this amazing sport and felt it was superior to baseball.

    I like baseball, it's a good sport.

But it's like only eating garlic bread and then discovering pizza.

Growing up half American I always thought baseball is better than cricket, but having watched nearly two matches now I think I may have been mistaken! World Cup > World Series! Come on England!
