My wonderful mum introduced me to cricket in the late 80s. Yesterday it was 3 years to the day since her funeral. I would love to think that somewhere, she was watching that amazing match ❤️

    Claire, Southend-on-Sea

This seems like a fitting text to end with...

I have every faith she was your good luck charm, Claire.

Being an Englishman living in Glasgow, I was expecting to find plenty of honorary New Zealand fans in the pub for the game. England's sports teams are not always greeted with much support north of the border, but the whole pub stood up and cheered the boys home! Incredible feeling!

    Will, Glasgow

You know something special happened yesterday when cricket, a sport most people call 'boring', is the talk of the office. Big smile on my face to hear this after 24 years of living and breathing the game! Well done England!

    Anon

How can you not love cricket when you see a game like that. Best game I've ever watched.

So, what do we all do now? Can any moment in our earthly lives ever eclipse what we saw yesterday?! This year's Ashes sure have something to live up to! Get the kettle on!

  8. Ben Stokes' New Zealand parents on England Cricket World Cup winpublished at 14:42 British Summer Time 15 July 2019

England beat New Zealand in a thrilling final at Lord's to win the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup.

Man of the match Ben Stokes hit an unbeaten 84 before the match went to the super over.

Born in New Zealand, he moved to Cockermouth, Cumbria, when he was 12 - his father Gerard was made head coach at Workington Town rugby league club.

Speaking from his home in Christchurch, New Zealand, Stokes' dad joked he was "probably the most hated father in New Zealand" while his mum Deb said she was "numb" and "hiding under my blanket" during the game.

I am old enough to have seen all three great world Cup wins by England - football, rugby and now cricket.

  10. 'I'm really pleased for Ben Stokes' - Rootpublished at 14:39 British Summer Time 15 July 2019

Engand win the Cricket World Cup

Joe Root said: "The way we approach things in the side, generally we're a pretty grounded team. We try to be realistic about things. Going into the tournament we knew there'd be some bumps in the road and we'd have to go through some tough times to get to where we wanted to at the end of it.

"We've got some strong characters. Look at Ben and Jos' partnership yesterday. The way they went about that and soaked up pressure to take it as deep as they did.

"And for Ben, I couldn't be more proud after everything that he's been through. He's a leader in the dressing room and a brilliant bloke to be associated with, so for him to enjoy yesterday and everything that comes with it, I'm really pleased for him."

I slipped into the stands to watch the final after working at Lords as a contractor with an agency. Getting paid on the same day and watching THAT final for free surely ranks as one of the best days of my life.

Until yesterday I had never listened to cricket on the radio and had never understood the obsession with Aggers. I understand it now! Thanks Aggers and the team for bringing the finale to life while I was stuck on the M40. Even the children in the back enjoyed it.

I was there at Lords yesterday with my dad and feel incredibly lucky to have witnessed history being made. I'm getting married next month so I'm now emailing the videographer to make our wedding montage to the music of the World Cup song! I've been playing it on repeat all day and I'm still getting goosebumps.

Royal Mail to paint postboxes white and gold

Postboxes in cities which hosted both men's and women's Cricket World Cup matches will be given a special paint job to mark England's success.

The men's victory yesterday over New Zealand in a nail-biting classic means both teams hold the world cup winners titles simultaneously for the first time.

The boxes, which will be painted white with a gold bat and ball, will be appearing all over the country, including in Nottingham - which hosted games in the men's tournament - along with Derby and Leicester, which hosted games in the 2017 women's tournament.
