Catching up on the TMS commentary of yesterday (I was in Trafalgar Square - pandemonium), it's been said before but Aggers is absolutely superb. Michael Vaughan doing a very good Rob Andrew impersonation from the rugby WC in 2003 as well!

England win the Cricket World Cup

We've just had a chance to ask Ben Stokes about whether it was five or six runs from that incident when the ball deflected off his bat to the boundary.

He told the BBC: "It's not how you want things to work out but it was written in the stars when things like that happen.

"With Trent Boult standing on the (boundary) rope, I think when stuff like that goes your way it's just meant to be."

England win the Cricket World Cup

England batsman Joe Root speaking to the BBC: "It's a phenomenal achievement. To be involved in the previous World Cup and go through all that, to see the transformation and development of the side over the last four years, and to be part of that journey has been extremely enjoyable and exciting.

"We've had some great fun on the field, playing in the manner we have, and now to enjoy being world champions, it's brilliant. I'm so proud of everyone that's involved in it, I'm so pleased for Eoin Morgan after all the hard work he's put in, building and growing this team.

"Plus Trevor Bayliss and all the guys that have played, seeing them improve the whole time and for us now to enjoy a day like yesterday. Hopefully it's the start of something much bigger as well."

This was basically me in front of the TV...

  13. 'In 10 years we'll see kids playing cricket in the street'published at 13:32 British Summer Time 15 July 2019

"This is exactly what cricket needed," ex-England captain Michael Vaughan said.

"This is the moment that, in five, 10 years time, we'll see kids playing cricket in the street [as a result].

"We've had great days in Test cricket - but this is another level. This is something I've never experienced."

The game was watched by a sold out-crowd at Lord's who lived every ball, and was also shown on free-to-air TV on Channel 4, as well as Sky.

"The best final I've ever seen, the best game I've ever seen," said England all-rounder Moeen Ali.

"This has changed cricket in our country."

  15. 'Perfect day gives amazing platform'published at 13:23 British Summer Time 15 July 2019

    Jonathan Agnew
    BBC cricket correspondent at Lord's

There will never be another finish to a World Cup final like that.

For England to win it, in front of a full house at Lord's in that incredible atmosphere, on free-to-air TV, with a massive audience on the radio and online, could not have been any better.

If that doesn't show people what an amazing sport cricket is and entice them to get into the game, I'm not sure what will.

It was the most ridiculous game of cricket, tied twice. You can debate the fairness of winning on the amount of boundaries scored, and you have to have some sympathy for New Zealand. How would we feel about that system if England had lost?

But, if the objective of this summer was to sell the game, maybe if England had lost we would still feel the final was something that would put cricket right up there as a sport everyone should get involved in.

Everything that was wanted to be achieved was achieved, and so much more on top. Now cricket has an amazing platform from which to build.

I don't think the England and Wales Cricket Board, and those of us who love cricket, can have asked for anything more.

I work at Lords as a supervisor and yesterday was the best day of my working life - such a privilege to be part of. Thanks to both teams for showing our sport in such a magnificent and fairly played way. Thank you to all the spectators for creating an incredible atmosphere, but mostly thank you to my stewards in the Edrich stand and also to all the stewards across the tournament for the hard work and dedication to the job.

After the week I've had this was much needed. Huge congratulations to England on the win, but also massive congratulations to New Zealand on helping make this the great game it was. Sport is truly remarkable and it unites people in a way not many other things do.

    Drew

My dad took me to the World Cup final at Lords in 1983 when India beat the overwhelming favourites West Indies. I've dreamt of winning it ever since so after 36 years of dashed hope it's an unbelievable feeling. Sadly lost my dad last year so that win is for him, he would have been so overjoyed!

I'm sure he's celebrating up there, Andy.
