  1. NZ PM Ardern jokes about cricket defeat 'trauma'published at 09:37 British Summer Time 15 July 2019

England win the Cricket World Cup

New Zealand's Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern joked that she has been "traumatised" by her country's Cricket World Cup defeat after they lost a nail-biting final to England.

But she told news outlet RNZ that she was "incredibly proud" of the team.

On social media many said New Zealand's Black Caps had lost the game but "won our hearts".

New Zealand lost on a technical boundary rule, giving England their first ever Cricket World Cup title.

"I think probably like a lot of New Zealanders I'm still feeling quite traumatised by that match," Ms Ardern told Radio New Zealand.

"But regardless of that final outcome I just feel incredibly proud of the Black Caps, and I hope every New Zealander does because they played remarkable cricket."

Pls can I thank the man who unbelievably kindly gave my 10 year old daughter his re-entry ticket at the north east gates with 4 overs left. She had never been to a cricket game before. Unfortunately she believes England actually win tournaments. #44or53yearsofhurt

It took one encouraging wife, three excited daughters, and one enthusiastic friend to convince me, on Saturday, to go for London and try for a ticket. I did. Got my ticket on Sunday morning at 1025am. It's the best £400 I've ever spent.

England win the Cricket World Cup

    BBC Radio 4

Jos Buttler speaking to the Today programme:

“A ridiculous match, it’s very hard to put into words really what happened. It’s incredible to have a game like that in a World Cup here at Lord’s, the atmosphere and the support was amazing. And by hook or by crook to be world champions is just awesome.

“No team deserved to lose, credit to New Zealand, it was a fantastic game and they will be gutted, they didn’t deserve to lose.

“It’s one of those games you will watch on cricket classics and think ‘surely not, I can’t believe it happened’. Just amazing."

My wife and me were at Lords. She'd never watched a cricket match before. "Are they all like that?" Can't talk today but have asked her to buy a lottery ticket for the first time. Dead cert.

RE: MJ (& Oli) 8:09 we haven't yet registered our firstborn son - definitely considering an extra middle name! I went into labour the day England beat NZ, brought him home from hospital on the day they beat Australia in the SF and yesterday had to try and stop myself from leaping up and down as fed during the super over! I think he might be a good luck charm for England - luckily we have tickets for the Ashes at Headingly!

  14. Unbelievable finale sets up super overpublished at 09:03 British Summer Time 15 July 2019

England win the Cricket World Cup

England were all but out of the game at 86-4, squeezed by New Zealand's skillful bowling, sharp fielding and smart tactics.

Gradually, they were dragged back into contention by Stokes and Buttler through patience, calmness and a little fortune.

Buttler was the more fluent, scooping and driving, but when he was caught at deep point for 59, England still needed 46 from 31 balls.

It was at this point that Stokes, the man who was hit for four sixes in the final over in England's 2016 World T20 final defeat and was cleared of affray 11 months ago, took control.

After Liam Plunkett was held at long-off in Neesham's 49th over, Trent Boult carried the ball over the boundary for a Stokes six before Archer was bowled.

That left 15 needed from Boult's final set. Two dots were followed by a heave over deep mid-wicket, then came the outrageous moment of fortune.

Diving for his ground to complete a second run, Stokes' bat was inadvertently struck by the throw and deflected the ball for four overthrows to make six in total.

With three runs needed from two balls, Adil Rashid was run out coming back for a second. When Wood suffered the same fate from the final ball, the match was tied.
