  1. 'Can Root do what Smith did?'published at 19:22 British Summer Time 1 August 2019

    Michael Vaughan
Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

I think we're in for that kind of series - we'll see lots of players get low scores but it'll be the real quality that shines through. Can Joe Root do tomorrow what Steve Smith did today?

Douglas Elder: Brisbane 2017: England make 302, Australia recover from 209-7 to make 328. England lose the match and never recovered. England’s inability to dismiss tailenders once again looks likely to be Ashes series defining.

Justin Langer will be looking at some of the strokes and the way they got out and going "come on, you've got to be better than that." Sometimes teams survive because of one individual. Australia survived today and are in this Test match because of Steve Smith.

Jon Evans: I wouldn't mind England being 162-2 tomorrow matching the last two wickets... Really need to learn to bowl at the tailenders. Match after match it is the same thing, we cannot just blame the lack of Anderson today.

  6. 'One of the greatest innings I've seen'published at 19:17 British Summer Time 1 August 2019

    Michael Vaughan
Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

The greatest format delivers once again, and the greatest cricketing contest, in my eyes, delivered once again. That was one of the greatest Test innings I've ever seen. The ball was doing plenty. He hung in there and didn't give a chance. He knew when to wear down a bowler. In Peter Siddle, he had a great partner, and then when Smith started to find his range - that was flamboyancy.

Sometimes you have to accept greatness is in front of you. Today we saw one of the great, great innings.

  8. 'Smith one of the best in the world'published at 19:15 British Summer Time 1 August 2019

    Glenn McGrath
Ex-Australia bowler on BBC Test Match Special

Smith looked emotional. It has been a tough last 16 months. It has been very emotional, very tough times.

When he got to his hundred we saw the massive smile and then had to compose himself. That shows mental strength.

He is one of best in world and showed he can adapt to different conditions.

Just seen a replay of when Steve Smith was given out lbw to Stuart Broad but overturned it on review.

He looks deeply offended that the umpire dared to assume he knew where Smith's off-stump was better than the Australia batsman.

  10. 'We hope is the news is better than we expect'published at 19:14 British Summer Time 1 August 2019

    BBC Radio 5 Live

England bowler Stuart Broad, asked when he first knew about James Anderson's injury: "Lunch. He went off straight after his spell but didn't say anything and came out back to field. We don't know the full extent yet. He is a bit quiet and came up to the bowlers and said sorry but there is nothing to be sorry about.

"He is a bit quiet and bit frustrated. All we can hope is the news is better than we expect."

For those of you asking for a James Anderson update - we don't have one.

England's all-time leading wicket-taker went for a scan this afternoon after feeling tightness in his previously torn right calf following his fourth over this morning.

Here is Stuart Broad on the injury...

  12. 'Forgot how emotionally draining Ashes is'published at 19:11 British Summer Time 1 August 2019

    BBC Radio 5 Live

England bowler Stuart Broad to 5 live: "I feel quite exhausted. I think that comes with the emotion of the first day of an Ashes series. You forget how emotionally draining these series can be, and we went down to a three-man seam attack, which upped the overs.

"Smith played a wonderful knock but anytime you bowl them out for under 300 on the first day of a Test match, we're pretty happy. It looks like there's runs out there if someone gets in, so we should take encouragement from the way he played.

"Australia threw it back at us after tea and I'd expect that throughout the series."

  13. 'I am lost for words'published at 19:09 British Summer Time 1 August 2019

    BBC Test Match Special

More from Steve Smith on the feeling when he reached his hundred: "I got the shakes a bit and all the hairs on my neck stood up. I have worked really hard in the last 18 months to come back and prove a few people wrong. I have heard a few people say I struggle against the seaming ball so it was nice on the first outing here to dig deep and get through. I am lost for words at the moment."

On the boos from the crowd, Smith said: "It doesn't bother me. I don't really listen. I did get good support from the Australia contingent. They were very loud and the boys on the sideline and in the dugout were cheering me on. That is what matters to me."

Harrison Short: The optimist in me says that 284 is a distinctly average score. Problem is we should have had them all out for under 150. Terrible captaincy from Root, brilliant innings from a master (as much as it pains me to say it). No wickets lost at stumps and we're still on top.

Smith reads the bowler. He is almost a step ahead before the ball is released. He reads little changes to the action.

The mental strength it showed, to come out today and score a brilliant 100. England bowled well and around that 40 over mark, the ball stopped doing as much.

  17. 'I'm proud of the way I stood up today'published at 19:06 British Summer Time 1 August 2019

    BBC Test Match Special

Australia's Steve Smith, speaking to 5 live: "It hasn't really sunk in yet. Obviously been a while since I've been able to put on the whites and the baggy green. I'm really proud of the way I was able to stand up today. We were in a bit of trouble there and we had to dig deep on a wicket that wasn't easy."

I can't really remember a single shot that Steve Smith played before he got to a hundred.

It's just remorseless, supremely assured accumulation that wears opposition bowlers down.

But then he cut loose in a way I've not seen from Smith too often in thrilling fashion.

    Heck of a knock.

England batsman Jos Buttler to Sky Sports: "It was a little bit frustrating in the end. It's tough. Steve played a fantastic innings. We've got to try and find a way of keeping the dismissal in the game as well.

"We never quite got enough balls at the 10 and 11 in one go. It's tough to say if that's par. Going a bowler down, it was a bit tricky for the guys to keep going, but an exceptional innings from Smith, and we'll see what kind of score it is tomorrow."
