Jason Roy gets forward and firmly defends his first delivery.
You won't mind this cheer though, Michael. Rory Burns clips nicely off his pads through mid-wicket and scampers three.

I don't like it when the crowd starts cheering defensive shots. You know England are under pressure when that happens.

219 balls, 16 fours, two sixes
That's an impressive effort by Stuart Broad, who had is place in the side questioned before the Ireland Test.
He really rises to the occasion against Australia. And while the fifth wicket may be a bit bittersweet given Steve Smith's game-changing innings, a five-for is worthy reward for how Broad bowled today. Not least in the absence of James Anderson.

I don't think Smith should get booed there.

I get it when Steve Smith walks out to bat but we can't be booing someone who has just played one of the greatest Test innings we have ever seen.

This has been one of the finest innings you will see. Smith doesn't deserve the booing.

That is 100 wickets in Ashes cricket for Stuart Broad.
Smith b Broad 144 (Aus 284 all out)
Stuart Broad has a five-for! That's not really the story here though.
Steve Smith finally falls for an outstanding 144 that has not just dragged his side back into the game but potentially given them a really competitive total in tough conditions.
He goes for another booming drive but Broad has pushed it full and straight and the ball rearranges the stumps.
The odd boo again but mainly applause as Smith sprints off and quickly raises his bat to all corners of Edgbaston.
