Ben Gardiner: Day 1 has showcased the best and worst of England. Serious opportunity lost. A lot of credit has to go to Smith. Applied himself, showed dogged determination throughout. A lot of the current crop of England Test players should sit up and take note.

  4. Aus 278-9published at 80 overs

Nathan Lyon steers the last to point for no run.

  5. Aus 278-9published at 79.5 overs

Nathan Lyon fends and misses at one from back of a length.

  6. Aus 278-9published at 79.4 overs

    Nathan Lyon drives for four.

  7. Aus 274-9published at 79.2 overs

Steve Smith guides down to third man, wants two but slips on the turn.

Right. England will have four balls at Nathan Lyon.

  8. Aus 273-9published at 79.1 overs

Maybe Chris Woakes' slower balls are Steve Smith's kryptonite.

He doesn't pick it, heaves away and somehow the ball evades the stumps.

Today has exposed England's bowling attack, the fact they have no real pace.

This is dire, dire captaincy from Root. Well though Smith has played, it is criminal to allow one batsman such a free ride without trying to get him out. England did this last year with Kohli and the tail and it didn't work then either!

    Toots. London

If I was at Edgbaston, I wouldn't boo Steve Smith, I'd boo Joe Root's terrible tactics.

    Steve, Dorset

  11. Aus 273-9published at 79 overs

And Nathan Lyon sees off both deliveries with relative ease.

  12. Aus 273-9published at 78.4 overs

Oooh a brief variation - Stuart Broad is going to get two balls at Nathan Lyon instead of the customary one.

  13. Postpublished at 18:27 British Summer Time 1 August 2019

Right, what England are doing here is utter dross. Spreading the field and basically allowing Steve Smith to just tap a single off the fifth ball and give England a maximum of one ball at Nathan Lyon.

And then that one ball is rarely even good.

Joe Root is having a low moment as captain right now.

It has been one of the great innings. Where Steve Smith has come back from, it is his first Test back after an emotional roller-coaster. For him to deliver this is incredible.

A cheat. A legend. You should boo. You shouldn't boo.

You can hold whatever view of him you want.

But you must see Steve Smith is one of the greatest batsmen of all time.

  16. Aus 268-9published at 78 overs

And Nathan Lyon sees it off.

  17. Aus 268-9published at 77.5 overs

I'm struggling to think of sporting parallels for this sort of tactic.

The best I can manage is when baseball teams used to intentionally walk Barry Bonds - even when the bases were loaded - out of fear of him hitting a home run.

Steve Smith finally takes the single on offer, giving Chris Woakes one ball at Nathan Lyon.

It is a white flag from England.

This field is embarrassing for the bowler. I would not bowl to this. Every fielder is on the boundary.

Joe Root has put every fielder back on the boundary for Steve Smith.

    It's not a great look.
