Chris Allan: Productivity is at an all-time low. I don’t know if I will have a job by the time we get to The Oval.

  2. Aus 109-5published at 39 overs

    Smith 36, Paine 3

A little bit of turn for Moeen but nothing extravagant. I'm sure England would much rather have the seamers on here but, as we said earlier, James Anderson is off having a scan on a calf issue.

England thought they'd got Smith out a few overs ago but the lbw decision was overturned...

Simon Bird: New plan: forget about taking Smith’s wicket and focus on getting everyone else out around him.

Chris Woakes' potentially game-changing spell is over. I guess England have to look after the seamers with Anderson injured.

    Moeen is on.

With Anderson gone for who knows how long, England needed one of their remaining quicks to play the hero role - and Woakes, perhaps the most underappreciated of the original quartet, has pulled out his cape and eyemask since lunch.

  7. Aus 108-5published at 38 overs

Stuart Broad is bowling a lot of scrambled seam deliveries. Tim Paine doesn't look at ease.

I don't think the crowd has reminded the Australia captain of his claim that there are 15 more intimidating atmospheres in the world than Edgbaston yet. It'll come if he gets out, I'm sure.

That 2005 match here, the start of that final day, the noise was deafening. As Australia chipped away, it was quieter - when it got to under 10, it was nearly silence. But the noise when Harmison took the final wicket... you could really feel the tension. You always know how well you're going as a visiting team by the noise levels in the crowd.

How has Paine survived this!? An absolute stunner of a delivery from Stuart Broad which drags him forward but nips beyond the edge of the bat.

Broad has a wry smile on his face. Paine has a cheeky grin.

Sam Roberts: In comes Tim Paine. Incidentally, there are 15 wicketkeepers in Australia better than him.

Woakes might just miss out of the title of most underrated sportsman ever but he has certainly changed the game in this session.

Australia were 99-3 before he removed Travis Head...

Is Chris Woakes the most underrated player in the history of sport?

    Shaf from Bedford

  14. Aus 108-5published at 36.2 overs

Chris Woakes has three slips and a short leg to Tim Paine. The Aussie skipper drives down the ground and Woakes tries to flick the ball onto the stumps to run Smith out at the non-striker's end. The ball just misses the timbers and Paine has his first runs.

That was such a good delivery from Woakes to Wade. It was full, swung in and hit the pad. Matthew Hoggard is at Edgbaston today and it's the type of delivery he bowled to left-handers back in 2005.

It's now captain and former captain at the crease for Australia with Tim Paine out there.

    A crucial spell coming up.

England leap around after Broad beats Smith's edge.
