You've got the situation now where the captain is on the boundary - at long-off. It doesn't feel quite right out there for England at the moment.

  2. NZ 286-5published at 99 overs

    Watling 55, De Grandhomme 55

We're halfway through the day and Joe Root is the only England bowler to have taken a wicket.

It's quite easy from up here to be critical of England's approach. I've just bumped into Michael Atherton who thinks England have been pretty lethargic. We've seen England struggle on this sort of surface before, even with the extra pace of Jofra Archer they are still struggling.

  4. NZ 285-5published at 98.3 overs

Ben Stokes has his hands on his head at slip after Leach nearly slides one through De Grandhomme's defence. I wonder how Stokes is feeling. He dropped Watling on 31 remember.

It's been a day of fine margins. That Jofra Archer lbw shout against BJ Watling missed by a millimetre, I thought front on it was hitting. Ben Stokes dropping Watling. Leach having Nicholls lbw just outside the line. It's been small things. You could say big things I suppose, Watling was on 31 when Stokes dropped him.

Joe Root was off the field during that over. He was stood up in the dressing room chatting with coach Chris Silverwood. Both men still seem relaxed despite their lead steadily being reduced.

You can hear the Barmy Army getting behind England here, they can sense that they are going through a difficult period.

  8. NZ 283-5published at 97.4 overs

Archer has a pained expression on his face. De Grandhomme has just backed away and ramped him over Ben Stokes' head at slip. England have a fine third man in place so it's only one run.

The Barmy Army are playing The Great Escape. Does that tell you something?

Colin de Grandhomme's scoring rate is higher than anyone else in the game but he's not played any ridiculous shots. You feel like both sides are still sussing each other out, the game is still in the balance.

Jofra Archer will continue after drinks. That last over was quick. More of the same is needed. England need wickets.

It's just a case of hanging in there and taking this game as deep as you can. They need to be patient and things will happen for them later in the day.

That's drinks by the way. It might be time for Joe Root to turn to 'Chapter Six - Rousing Speeches' in the captaincy manual.

Leach has to keep things tight if Archer is going to create some theatre at the other end. The end to the over is better in fairness to England's spinner.

This is De Grandhomme's fourth fifty in this last five innings. Three of them have been not out too so he averages 304 in that period.

  16. NZ 280-5published at 96.1 overs

Short and wide from Jack Leach and Colin de Grandhomme hits another four to over take BJ Watling.

Jofra Archer is firing up here. I think he's realised England have hung in for as long as they can. He's cranking up.

  18. NZ 276-5published at 96 overs

That was really, really close. Much closer than I thought on first look. Broad gave Archer a little pat on the back after the decision was shown on the big screen. England's fast bowler fizzes one down at 94mph. I think he's getting rattled.

That is an outstanding decision. It's missing the top of the stumps by about a millimetre.

  20. Not outpublished at 01:38 Greenwich Mean Time 23 November 2019

Ooo. It is a tight one but the ball-tracking shows it would have gone a couple of millimetres over.

    Not out.
