There's swing for Sam Curran first up to Colin de Grandhomme. An inside edge is the only thing that saves the right-hander from a plumb lbw.

Watling hits superb unbeaten 119, Santner 31 not out
England only take two wickets all day

Here we go then. The players are back out and it's going to be Sam Curran with the new ball.
A little surprising.

Gareth Hatton: Surely the only benefit of shift work is being able to follow cricket through the night?
You can do it, Mike!

MikeyBlighe: Following from Halifax (Nova Scotia, not Yorkshire). 4 hours behind the UK, gonna try and hang in for the long haul this eve and tomorrow (with the new Pokémon games keeping me company... don't judge!).
Marnus Labuschagne - I'm still sick of writing his name two months on - is closing on his first Test hundred in the Australia game v Pakistan.
He's on 76 not out. David Warner is unbeaten on 152.
Fair! Good night?

Dbh: You’re kidding yourself. Most of your listeners are coming in from nights out and settling for afters and I’m not ashamed to say I’m one of them.
I see there are still 10,000 of you holding on through the lunch break.
Where are you following from? I reckon we must have a few shift workers reading? Are some of you tucked up in bed with TMS on? Anyone having a quick check of the scores on a night out?
Let me know!
Here's some Big Bash news.
It has just been announced that England bowler Chris Jordan has signed for the Perth Scorchers.
This year's Big Bash starts on 17 December in Australia.

I'd say that is a little harsh, Paul. But it was not great either. The session was all a bit flat. I think a lot of that was down to a pretty docile pitch.

Paul Barrow: That was one of the most uninspiring sessions of cricket we've produced all year & there have been plenty. Rudderless and shambolic.

Ex-New Zealand captain on BBC Test Match Special
It was an absorbing morning. Both sides will be relatively happy. It is an attritional pitch. It will take time to get runs.
There will be variable bounce later in the game. First innings runs are crucial.
There was just the one wicket for England in that session. It was slow going, not helped by the pitch.
Joe Root was the man who dismissed Henry Nicholls.
The new ball is overdue so things should liven up after the break.
Thanks Callum.
Hello again everyone. It has been a while.
Keep fighting through the tiredness, people. You can do it.
That's me done for the time being.
Matt Henry will take you through the interval and the afternoon session.

Perhaps the most surprising thing about that first session is the fact that England got through 32 overs.
We may (there's still a lot of time for this to go wrong) actually finish on time at 5am.
New Zealand have added 80 runs for the loss of Henry Nicholls from the first session.
They'll be delighted with that, they are fighting their way back into the game.

Watling has blunted England. He has thwarted them.
