England would have arrived at the Bay Oval this morning with aspirations of getting a 100-150-run lead.

They'll be hoping in this final session they can avoid New Zealand setting up the possibility of them getting a similar lead.

There are 31 overs left in the day, England need wickets.

What would England do for a fully-fit Mark Wood now?

England tried a few different things in that session. They had funky fields, Stuart Broad went to the cutters but nothing worked.

As I said, it's happened a few times over the years. But how do they go about stopping it? Everyone thought the extra pace of Jofra Archer would dig England out of situations like these but he hasn't fired at all so far. Chris Woakes averages 61.77 overseas while the other option is the quicker uncapped Saqib Mahmood.

    Thanks Matt.

Ah, England. We've seen them toil in the field numerous times over the last few years but it doesn't get any easier to watch.

I didn't bring any luck for England. Callum Matthews is back to take over. You'll have to stay with us and see if he brings a change of fortunes.

That was a good session for New Zealand. It was a difficult afternoon for England and it's something for them to think about at tea. The game is still there to be won and be grasped by either team. New Zealand have the chance to get a useful and maybe terminal first innings lead.

There's polite applause as the batsmen walk off. BJ Watling and Colin de Grandhomme have played really, really well.

They saw off the new ball and have now moved within touching distance of England's total.

A tough, wicketless session for England.

Colin de Grandhomme pops one up to where a short leg would have been but England don't have anyone there with protecting runs now important.

BJ Watling is doing his best to make sure this is the final over of the session.

Looking back at yesterday, I was confused by the Jos Buttler and Jack Leach partnership. They were initially taking the singles and then Buttler decided he wanted to take all the strike. I didn't get that, if you were trusting him initially just keep the score moving like this pair are now.

We've had news on Rory Burns' injury. He has split the skin on his thumb trying to take that catch a few overs back. He's currently getting the injury glued back together.

Jack Leach is going to bowl what could be the last over before tea.

Surely New Zealand haven't reduced England to this? Bowling wide of the stumps when they've still got a lead. There must still be better plans.

    Watling 79, De Grandhomme 64

Jeremy Coney is getting more and more confused on TMS by these tactics from England. De Grandhomme might do something loose but Watling doesn't look like it at all. After collecting those four runs he just watches the rest of the over go by.

New Zealand are only 38 runs behind now.

It's a bit early for presents like this. BJ Watling just flicks the ball off his hip for four down to fine leg off Sam Curran.

I don't think it's a bad idea to just clamp his scoring. He likes to feel ball on bat, he's a typical hitter who likes to keep scoring. It's not a bad ploy.

England might just be preying on Colin de Grandhomme's patience.

Almost the commentator's curse from me. Colin de Grandhomme plays a loose, floaty drive and misses the ball. It was so close to an edge. Broad closes his eyes, rocks his head back before staring down at the ground.
