David: Chris Woakes (With Beard) has an overseas Test bowling average of 13 and average speed around 85mph.

If you get Kane Williamson out for single figures and get New Zealand three down at lunch the decision to bowl first is probably justified.
Nicely timed again from Ross Taylor, this time down the ground, and he beats Jofra Archer at mid-on to pick up two.
Taylor pushes a quick single to end the over.

That was a very authoritative four by Ross Taylor. He stood up and hit it hard. This ground is a happy hunting ground for Taylor.
Tom Latham takes a stroll to short leg and has a word with himself as he's almost undone by a Stuart Broad inswinger that gets him playing across his pads.
Ooh, that's a vicious shot from Ross Taylor, absolutely mullering a cut shot off Broad away for four. Lovely stuff.
Stuart Broad's back on.

There's two fellas that have just walked in carrying their own bean bags. That's the way to do it!
Woakes 4-1-13-1
That's a stonker from Chris Woakes, a bit of shape taking the ball somehow past Tom Latham's off stump, before Latham scrambles through for a bye.
Ross Taylor works himself an easy single to get his innings under way.
It's Woakes 1-0 Williamson in the battle of the beards.

Carl Collen: Yes Woaksey! Key wicket from Mr Reliable! Why do we keep leaving him out?!
Ben Howard: Massive.
Chris Bloomfield: Brilliant delivery. Some might doubt Chris Woakes’ longevity due to injury and overseas form but these conditions are perfect for him.
Joe Root is miming that catch he just took to Ben Stokes, who is doing a fine job of feigning interest in what he's saying.
A good bit of relay fielding on the boundary, Zak Crawley sliding along the turf and parrying the ball to Chris Woakes, stops Tom Latham benefiting from another leggy Sam Curran delivery.

That was a terrific catch. Joe Root had no right to expect that to come to him.
Looking at it again, that's a sensational catch from Joe Root.
It looked as though it was going to beat him, moving so quickly to his right, but he reacted quickly to get both hands underneath it and cling on.

It's fantastic bowling from Chris Woakes. Even though he'd been driven down the ground, he continued to pitch it up and England will be mightily happy to dismiss New Zealand's best batsman and one of the best players in the world.
They will feel that wicket justifies their decision to put New Zealand in.
We're taking drinks while Ross Taylor makes his way out to the middle.

It's a good catch, low down. It looked as if he tried to play on the on side but Joe Root has taken a very good catch.
Williamson c Root b Woakes 4 (NZ 39-2)
Oh, what a ball!
A lovely delivery from Chris Woakes, squaring up Kane Williamson, and the New Zealand skipper is on his way. It goes low to first slip where Joe Root takes an absolutely terrific catch, diving to his right and getting his fingertips under the ball as it goes low towards the turf.
Well then.
