  1. NZ 17-1published at 9 overs

If Ollie Pope goes on and gets a double ton then I won't question England's selection ever again.

Oh! Beauty! Stuart Broad cuts Tom Latham in half with a delivery that holds its line and wiggles past the outside edge of the bat. Latham, wisely, leaves the rest of the over alone and plays out a maiden.

Coincidentally after the earlier Ollie Pope stat, the first time BJ Watling kept in a Test match was also just his sixth match doing it.

  3. NZ 17-1published at 8 overs

Jofra Archer's just cranking himself up here.

His final delivery comes down at 86mph and Tom Latham pushes it away for an easy single.

Kane Williamson, who really doesn't get to spend a lot of time resting in the changing room these days, is in at three.

He was pushing hard. In his mind he might have been thinking about the last Test when he got bogged down and didn't score. His eyes almost lit up at the opportunity to score and he snatched at it.

It's not a great shot at all from Jeet Raval.

    Raval c Root b Broad 5 (NZ 16-1)

    Pitched up and gone!

I mean, it's a horrible shot from Jeet Raval, but Stuart Broad has finally found the right length on this. It's just that little bit fuller, encouraging Raval to throw an awkward-looking drive at it, and his hard hands help send the ball at chest-height to Joe Root at first slip.

It was the correct decision to put New Zealand in. The grass on the pitch has helped the ball skid on - there's been considerable carry - but at the moment the batsmen are playing with soft hands and playing very late. They are not pushing at the ball, which would mean thick edges.

  9. NZ 16-0published at 6 overs

That's not where Tom Latham was intending, playing away from his body and getting an edge on this latest Jofra Archer delivery, but he angles the ball past a diving gully fielder and away for four.

    Tidy enough from Archer.

The ball was carrying through from Stuart Broad, it looked like there was a little bit of seam movement from back of a length. We might see Jofra Archer getting some steep bounce from this wicket early on.

  11. NZ 12-0published at 5 overs

There's definite swing there for Stuart Broad, nipping another one back over Jeet Raval's stumps, but Raval can leave it on length.

This is just a touch too short from Broad, I think, and Raval nabs a single off a leading edge, much to Broad's irritation.

Hamilton may not be the most celebrated part of New Zealand, but the country's fourth largest city has a few notable claims to fame.

It's the gateway for fans of the Lord of the Rings franchise to visit the Hobbiton Movie set, you can take a boat ride under thousands of twinkling glowworms at the nearby Waitomo Caves and Hamilton is also the unlikely birthplace of a musical phenomenon.

Richard O'Brien lived in Hamilton and it was here that he dreamt up "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" which became a cult movie watched by millions.

A statue of the iconic character "Rif Raf" stands at the site of the old Embassy Theatre where O'Brien used to work.

  13. NZ 10-0published at 4 overs

That's a leading edge from Tom Latham, caught playing across his pads to Jofra Archer, but it plops harmlessly into the off side, well short of any fielder.

Hmm. The last ball of the over just bounces a little more from Archer, and Latham drops his hands to plonk the ball down at his feet. Maiden.

If you had this much grass on a wicket in England it would be a disgrace. It would be moving all over the place. But here it just seems to help keep the wicket together.

  15. NZ 10-0published at 3 overs

    Raval 4, Latham 6

Seddon Park looks another sensational New Zealand ground, with grass banks galore. Are there any ugly grounds over there?

Jeet Raval doesn't quite time a cover drive but he beats Jofra Archer to pick up a couple of runs, and he's more than happy to let the rest of the over swing by his off stump.

It's just the sixth first-class match Ollie Pope has kept wicket in. The last time England had someone keeping who had kept in so few first-class games was in 1907, Dick Young. He kept wicket in the first Test in Sydney - it was his fifth time keeping wicket.

  18. NZ 8-0published at 2 overs

A touch leggy from Jofra Archer first up and he's merrily knocked away for a single by Jeet Raval.

Tom Latham settles himself for a few defensive prods and pokes.

When you put your hand on the wicket it feels hard. It doesn't feel like it's going to break up; the grass should hold it together. I wouldn't expect to see much extravagant movement like you'd expect to at this time of the morning on a tacky wicket.
