A lovely catch again. South Africa are in big trouble and England's bowlers are fighting hard to restore their position.

    Du Plessis c Stokes b Anderson 1 (SA 40-3)

It's all happening from the Wynberg End! Different bowler, same result.

James Anderson finds the inbetween length, neither short nor full, and Faf du Plessis is trapped on the crease. The edge is gobbled up by Ben Stokes, sending the skipper on his way. England have picked up 3-14 and are bang on top.

Stuart Broad is withdrawn and James Anderson gets a go from the end where it's all happening. England are chirpy, telling Faf du Plessis how important this partnership is...

Grant Kennett: Anderson really did not look threatening this morning... I feel his time on foreign tours may be done as he just doesn't carry the same weapons when it's not on an English country garden.

Curran is struggling with his line. Before, it was too straight to Elgar. Now, it's wide enough to cut, only saved from conceding four by the deep point posted in the distance. The ball has done something from Broad's end, but not that of Anderson/Curran. Dom Bess might be asked to plug in and hold up.

Faf du Plessis, complete with pink gloves and pink batting grip, taps the ground then shuffles across his stumps to the charging Broad. The skipper's short-sleeved shirt is so far up his arms that he is basically wearing a tank top. A maiden, but Broad's threat turned down ever so slightly.

SCurran scurries in to the left-handed Elgar. Like Anderson before him, he's struggling to get the ball to move off the straight. The way Broad is bowling, you wonder how much damage a fit Jofra Archer would have done on this surface.

James Rimmer: The umpiring telling Broad not to go onto the danger zone put him wider and created the wicket on the next delivery just from the change of angle forced Hamza into playing

    Broad 5-3-12-2

The players have taken drinks at the fall of the wicket. You wonder if this is another of Broad's hot streaks. Earlier in the over, he was warned for running on the pitch. Not that he'll mind. Faf du Plessis is the new man, greeted by Broad hurling the ball back at him. Looking again at that Stokes catch, I'm not sure I bigged it up enough. It was a jasper.

A beautiful catch low down by Ben Stokes at second slip. This is the start England not only wanted, but needed.

    Hamza c Stokes b Broad 5 (SA 38-2)

Superb catch! Brilliant bowling! Stuart Broad is dragging England back into this match.

Broad has an excellent record in South Africa and he is exploiting the movement on offer, nipping the ball away from the right-handers. Zubayr Hamza edges towards second slip, where Ben Stokes throws himself to his right, grabbing the ball in both hands just before it reaches the turf.

    Thrilling cricket.

England have had plenty of personnel issues with illness and injury on this tour. If they are short of players today there is half a stand here at Newlands populated by spectators dressed in full whites ready for action.

Not a great start for Curran. Two leg-stump half-volleys are picked off by Elgar, causing Root to jog for a chat with the bowler. You'd hope that Curran wouldn't need to be told "don't bowl there".

The bowlers have assessed there is not much swing so have gone to wobble-seam deliveries early. If you pitch that delivery back a bit, you give the ball more chance to do something.

Sam Curran is coming on, replacing James Anderson. These are the best before-and-after shots we can come up with for Jimmy. Conclusion? The colour of Jimmy's hair changes quite often.

    Broad 4-3-8-1

Zubayr Hamza is the new man, defending his first ball as we see the replay of the Malan wicket. If you've ever seen the Friends episode where they try to poke Ugly Naked Guy with the giant stick, Malan was jabbing like that. There was seam movement, too. Without the wobble in the air, Broad is happy to roll his fingers behind the ball to exploit the movement off the pitch.

Not a great shot, playing that far outside the off stump. I was about to say I liked the body language of the South Africa openers and that they were leaving well. But that was a poor shot and a good catch by Joe Root.
